I wonder if this film should have had the original cast instead?

I was wondering if the movie version would have been more successful if it would have taken place 30 years after the events of the Junkman in Space finale. I think it could have been possible, since most of the cast at the time was still alive except for Guy Williams who passed away in 1989. I guess the film should have mentioned that John Robinson passed away before the events of the movie. I guess it could be said that 30 years after the show was canceled, the Robinson family may have finally found a way to return back to Earth.

It wouldn't have made enough to dethrone Titanic's number one spot at the box office though. Then again that's the only thing I can say in this film's defense. What a failure, nothing not even Gary oldman worked.

"More human than human here!"

That could have been an interesting concept.
Don't know if you could pull it off today.

The original Jupiter II all battered up, held together
with duct tape and bailing wire limping it's way home.
Constantly listing as usual.

With the appropriate script changes to explain Guy Williams absence.
Mr. Robinson died in an accident or something.

Oops! I forgot that Jonathan Harris is no longer with us as well.

Easy enough to explain plot wise. They got fed up with
Dr. Smith and abandoned him on one of the various planets
they visited.
