There's enough things wrong with this movie to write a book!

Holy crap...where do you start? Virtually no character development, except maybe the Penny character who seems to be an oversexed 12 year old that dresses like a hooker. Matt Leblanc should stick to playing mildly retarded Italians, it seems to be the only thing he's good at. The CGI monkey thing only serves to annoy and insult the intelligence of anyone over 9 years old. The mom and dad seem like they're on lithium, nothing seems to phase them at all. More than worthy as MST3K fodder, and then some. The special effects were great, but the casting and dialog just suck. It almost seems like they picked a bunch of actor's names out of a hat. If Bush really wants to torture prisoners in Guantanamo Bay, he should make them watch this movie over and over.

Should we watch a clasic like plan 9 instead ?

That's just so disturbing. I seriously hope you were a kid yourself when you first saw this movie. (Actually, I don't know if it would even mitigate yourpost.)

SPOILERS AHEAD.

Looking back, there were two things that bothered me about this movie.

One, everybody had way too much "attitude" so nobody was likeable, and there was no chemistry between the characters. The family members were just annoying overall, particularly the two emasculating women.

Two, at the movie's core were issues of feelings of abandonment and parental neglect, and as a result the movie as a whole was just depressing and sad, particularly when you get to the part /**spoiler here**/ about an alternative version of the boy, now a bright hippie in his twenties, raised by a half-spider version of Dr. Smith, because the boy's real father was never a father for him.

I can see why this film flopped at the box office when it came out. How many people really want to go to the movies to be annoyed and depressed?

Funny that you mention MST3k, capnmorgan. While I would LOVE to see the original guys do this movie, a friend and I decided to do our own MST3k-style commentary for this turd of a movie. We make jokes about pretty much everything you mentioned (a personal favorite line of ours refers to William Hurt's lack of enthusiasm: "He makes Steven Wright look passionate!"). You can download the track (or at the very least check out a sample of it) here:

I was not the least bit disappointed in this movie when I saw it . I KNEW it was going to be a typical Hollywood "re-imagining" which had none of the charm of the original. I was expecting CRAP --- and that's what it was.

Is this one of the first posts by RiffTrax?
Cool.

I saw after 12 years tonight, and remember how sad this movie can be at times, I still remembered when they discover the tombs of the women, and the playback of the wristwatch reminded me of ripley's last recording on the Nostromo.
I have to say that Gary Oldman was of course the single best character, followed by the robot.

I'm sorry but I really can't agree with most of what was said here in the first post.

1)Virtually no character development.
Really? Will at the beginning of the film feels unloved by his father, and his father is distant wrapped up in his career. By the films end both have changed. Penny also hates this whole trip, and by the end is happy to be with her family. Judy IS as West observes a cold fish but by the end softens to West. West while cocky and a little annoyed by the Robinsons learns that their stronger than he imagined.

That sounds like an awful lot of character development to me.

2)Penny is an oversexed 12 year old who dresses like a hooker.
First she's a young lady and growing into a woman for her to be interested in boys is not uncommon...I find that hard to define as 'oversexed'. Second dressed like a hooker? She's dressed as what the makers of the film envisioned a future teen would dress like...and honestly she wears her Jupiter 7 flight suit just like most of the cast does throughout most of the film...how is that a hooker?

3)Matt LeBlanc should stick to playing semi-retarded Italians.
I'm not retarded or Italian and I find that an offensive and just plain stupid statement. Leblanc played exactly what was written, a cocky young heartthrob pilot and to be honest there was nothing wrong with that.

4)The CGI Monkey.
Well I'll agree its an annoying character, but its also a throwback to the original series in which Penny had that space monkey. Personally I didn't like the space monkey to begin with and didn't care for Blarp in this either but it was a pet and had little or no story behind it other than for Penny to have a pet so it didn't bother me too much.

5)Insulting the intelligence of anyone over 9 years old.
As for it insulting the intelligence of anyone over 9 years old...Blarp is not supposed to appeal to the over 9 audience. Lost in Space is designed as a family film that will appeal to as broad an audience as possible. The adults will like the sci-fi element and the nostailga of an update on the original. Matt Leblanc is there to bring in the girls and women. Heather the young boys, Mimi the men, Will and Blarp the kids. And Smith of course is the antgonist.

6) The Mom and Dad seem to be on lithium.
What? I mean seriously, what? Nothing phases them? First of all their professionals in their field, so they handle stuff as calmly as possible. Next Nothing phases them? I don't know they all seem pretty phased when Judy is about to die. And they all seem pretty phased when the Spiders are attacking them, and when the ship is trying to break atmosphere or you know what I've made my point there.

I'm not gonna debate the sucess of the film clearly it didn't hit very big, honestly I don't know why it wasn't awful...granted it wasn't great, but your ripping review is harsh at best...offensive at mid level...and just plain uninformed at worst.

Twelve? No character looking like that could be TWELVE. Get your resources right-Lacy was born in '82 so when she played Penny in '98, she was SIXTEEN.
Got that?
Sixteen, not twelve.
