best guess? the position benefited the body while in stasis. Like how certain sleeping positions affect your back.

It wasn't a full deep freeze that stopped all bodily functions only a form of hibernation and it needed monitoring and feedback. The chest piece provided monitoring and the eyepiece provided the feedback. At least that's what I remember reading on the trading cards.

I think the given explanation was that it was positioning them for emergency escape should the ship be destroyed and the pods needed to be jettisoned into space.
