No character was likeable

I did like the movie, but I came away from it thinking that all the characters were bad, flawed and vapid people. Even the Chloe Sevigny character, who would be the most redeemable one. Many people would likely disagree with me about this, but I didn't see much in her to make her a good person in the end. But this has been one of the major criticisms of the disco "era," the soulless, materialistic and superficialness of the scene. I didn't mind this at all though, it was just interesting, and the film holds up for repeat viewings.

i agree completely! it's been one of my favourite films for years now, at least my favourite stillman, and i've watched it too many times basically. and even if i don't think stillman made it a point to make the characters soulless, materialistic and so on as a criticism of the era, cause i think this film could've as easily have been set in the vapid later part of the eighties, or for that matter, the vapid era we're living in now; it's as you point out, what makes this film so interesting. it's completely character driven, and that is what bugs me, both when the film came out, and later, the comparisons people make with 54, which i only watched one time, solely because of my interest in that era. as a film however, 54 was a disaster. this one was not, and it has, imho, always been overly critized.

There was one likable character IMO, though she wasn't a "main" character. However, she was in several scenes and she was the prettiest girl in the movie. I'm speaking of Holly of course, the third roommate.

I liked the Tiger Lady. I liked her a lot.

Agreed. Holly (Tara Subkoff) is a very beautiful woman. Her part was so small in this, and regrettably so, because I found her character interesting. The way that Charlotte kept lying about her not being very bright, then toward the end, Alice has a heart to heart with her about the STD/guys accepting this, and Holly reveals herself to be quite the intelligent girl. I think Alice was delightfully surprised at what she said and realised just how much of calculating liar Charlotte was.

I mean Charlotte spent so much time tearing down Holly as someone who was unintelligent, probably because she did sometimes utter some dim-witted remarks ("I forgot which way the numbers went on the East Side"), but who doesn't slip up sometimes? Charlotte probably used these comments to her advantage (or Holly's disadvantage) in painting Holly as a dumb ass - which she really was not.

Chris Eigeman's character (Dez) seemed fairly similar to his character (Max) in the movie Kicking and Screaming.

Just Holly and the loyal Scottie dog from Lady and the Tramp. 😀
