He was satisfied with Double Team.

Please, you have absolutely no idea what you're talking about here. I've got news for you! As a matter of fact, to this day Tsui Hark is not satisfied with any of his movies at all! It's part of his personality to think like that, he's quite realist. Officially (i like that word) Knock Off is really one of his best movies, just read some books about this director, you'll be quite surprised how wrong you are. Anyway someone who thinks Double Team is a pretty good film in particular has absolutely no business to talk with me or about Tsui Hark anyway. Tsui is a very smart man, i would say as well that Knock Off is a bad movie when it comes to the commercial profit and mainstream viability. He knows why he said that, he knows that he's made a very complex, complicated movie for the average moviegoer. But he also knows that there are people who comprehend what he achieved -- this is applied to each movie he's made to date. He knows that it's only up to the viewer to judge what is good or what is bad.
Note: Notice how cleverly he says that the script is not good, in his other words - "the movie is not done in the right way to make the audience feel like they like the movie". Beautifully said, i couldn't say it better myself. The same can be said (btw, indeed he already uttered something similar) about his other masterpieces like The Blade, Time and Tide, Green Snake, Butterfly Murders, etc...

So, please, do some research about this movie and about the personality of its director before you go posting again. Believe me, no one's interested in your pretentious attitude. I see that you have a lot to catch on before you'll comprehend how great this movie is. Good luck...

Jack Crow-3:

Nicely said and explained, and of course i totally agree with you but i don't think you can convince today's movie generation only grown upon the predictably functional Hollywood blockbusters, let alone Van Damme crapfests, feeding all but every little kid in the world, which exactly this film is spoofing quite effectively.

I think Knock Off is really good, truly awesome movie even though Hark Tsui has already much better films under his belt. Did you see his Seven Swords?

Oh, accidently i think you're right, Double Team is really embarrassingly bad film and sadly very failed attempt to make something like Knock Off a year later. I think he's made another film with Van Damme just to rectify his blunder in DT. I'm sure he succeeded quite decently.

very true.

VCrow-- I applaud you, man. Very nicely put!

Although, i'm 100% convinced that Tsui Hark took Van Damme into his second film just to use him as a parody of his own image in the western eyes which probably not even Van Damme himself realized this during the shooting. Actually the whole film is a parody of the American action genre per se by the usage of the multitude of the clichés and hilarious self-references, so it doesn't surprise me.

Since the day i saw this film i wondered why Hollywood actually never managed to pull off at least "one" truly brilliant action film like this. "Knock Off" will definitely remain in my memory as possibly the most distinctively enjoyable and memorable action comedy i have ever seen in my life. Classic all the way through.

I suspect JCVD was high on cocaine during most of this movie, and that's why he didn't realize it was a parody of himself and Hong Kong film-making (if in fact he didn't). Still, I agree that Knock Off is one of his best movies, the others being Bloodsport, TimeCop, Hard Target, Universal Soldier, and Double Impact.

Well said, jlcurtis321. Judging from the rating it has on here and the reviews it got from critics, it's blatantly obvious that people took this parody/satire way too seriously and thus, completely missed the point of it. Thankfully, more people are starting to see it for the awesome (and hilarious) action comedy it truly is.

Don't hate me 'cause I'm beautiful.
