"True love cannot be found where it does not truly exist. Nor can it be hidden where it truly does."

It makes sense that when he's reading the book, this is what causes him to realize that he was completely wrong. Plus, each letter was super short and both parties looked up at each other at the same time, so they probably said the same thing. This was part of the speech at the wedding, and I'd be willing to bet that this is what the letters said.

The Author of the book that was given to MAXim is by the philosopher from the 17th century, Francois Duc de la Rochefoucauld. He wrote "Reflections; or Sentences and Moral Maxims". The maxim is around the 69th to 71st, depending on the book, the books subject matter is on maxims or commonly held truths. The specific maxim can be found at hyperlink: http://www.gutenberg.net/dirs/etext05/8roch10h.htm#70 ; and the hyperlink to the book at Project Gutenberg is: http://www.gutenberg.net/etext/9105 ; there are previous posts that asked the same question. It does not really matter what the letter says as it is a prop, this though is what it said (see links above).

I always thought the letters more than likely said what Max said in his toast. Even though I like the movie (I am an unabashed sucker for romantic comedies--even those of lesser quality) it simply wasn't a smart enough movie to attempt such legerdemain and have it come across as anything but annoying. Still liked it though :)
