A career of awful performances? He has some of the best range of any actor in the past 30 years. Very few actors could be extremely laugh out loud funny in one role, and also play a huge group of various dramatic roles and do them well.
Truthfully he was always a very underrated actor. Many people did not take his dramatic work as seriously even though much of it was better than his comedic work.

His dramatic work was extremely impressive and vastly underrated.
This role is a good example such as "One Hour Photo" and "The Night Listener".
