Comparable films from the same general era

"Holy Man" (1998) comes across as a hybrid of "Michael" (1996) and "City of Angels" (1998) and was the obvious precursor to "Bruce Almighty" (2003) and "Evan Almighty" (2007). "Highway 60: Episodes from the Road" (2002) is cut from the same cloth, but involves a magical Irishman rather than an angel or God, like those other movies.

"Holy Man" is arguably the least of these, except for maybe "Evan Almighty." It's an odd mixture of an amusing drama with Eddie Murphy mixed with spiritual docudrama and it left audiences scratching their heads. At least it's unique and drives home a relevant moral. It possesses its own appeal once you catch a grip and Murphy is thoroughly convincing as 'G' (I think it's obvious who he really is). The movie seems overlong though and needed tightened up with a rewrite.
