The music and mask ruin this

Doesn't feel like a Halloween film

Agreed.

I have to agree that it does not have a Halloween film feel to it, but I found it more entertaining that Halloween 4 to 6.

This film felt more like Scream than Halloween. But that was the good thing about it. I liked the 90s Scream-style touch to it.

reply

Should've had a 90's Halloween touch to it. Enough said.

The issue with the mask is really kind of embarrassing. Why couldn't they just stick with one and use it in the whole movie? The scene with the CGI mask makes me laugh every time. I think it's a good movie overall, but boy could it have been so much more.

Amen to that. Better mask, better person to play Myers. I swear every time he "rolls" into frame coming for Marion I think "steamroller". It's funny. Less Scream nods and more actual Halloween nods. Less annoying teens. Take what the original did, modernize it slightly and let the magic happen. But nooo...they had to turn it into something it's not supposed to be. It definitely could've been a much better movie.

Technically speaking, they did modernize it. That's what was modern at the time, the whole Scream vibe.

However, I definitely agree they could have toned it down. Using the Scream score was a cheap ass move, there's the case where they should've modernized something, kind of recreate/pay homage to Carpenter's original score.

And the watching Scream 2 on TV makes me cringe. Didn't that movie come out, what, seven months before this one did? Probably was still in theaters while this was in production.

Given the previous entries, yes. I understand there are reasons for different masks, but H20, being what it was, 20th anniversary, return of JLC, etc. could've taken the time to get it right. They had 3 years between sequels. And it's not *just* the mask it was a contributing factor. The visual aesthetic, the musical aesthetic, even the tension, all Scream not Halloween. Jamie Kennedy himself could've shown up. Come on.

A lot of people complain about 4's mask, which at the time was horrendous, but given the lawsuit w/Don Post over the original, etc. it's understandable. This had no legal issues. 6's mask was perfectly fine and less than 3 years old. Go with that look. Don Shanks had a bigger head, hence his mask change. Even Loree's Resurrection mask looked fine. Not sure what they were doing or thinking, but with a project this huge, the villain needs to look the part. That's like having Jason with a substandard hockey mask. Doesn't cut it.

The score perfectly fits its era, and makes a couple nods to Herrmann's Psycho score. Thankfully, it doesn't sound like it came out of a synth.

reply

Ah but you can't beat that classic synth sound from the Carpenter/Craven era!

The mask is AWFUL.

I watch this because it has a Ending. and skip Resurrection and the newer films altogether.
