I love Rhys Meyers. What the h*ll was Driver's character thinking?

What was she thinking, going for old man Wilkinson as opposed to the lusty & hot young thing of Rhys Meyers? He may have been a horny virgin (or nearly a virgin) but I am sure he could have been taught a trick or two. And he legitimately loved her and even wanted to marry her as contrasted to the callous way in which the father treated her. Plus, Rhys Meyers is smoooooookin.

I 1000000000% AGREE! Holy crap! I couldn't understand either. He is beautiful! and interesting and weird and just .... AUGH! If I was her character I would have been all over him like a bad suit.

Jonathan Rhys Meyers is also the best and most memorable thing about this film. The film itself is not that great, and there is a reason why he, and particularly his scene on the beach, are what people enjoy most.

If JRM hadn't been in it, it would have been a total failure.

I agree! Who wants to weep over an old man when you have someone as tasty as Jonny following you around?

But at the same time it wouldn’t make sense for her to go for him. I’m not quite sure about the ages but im guessing Henry is suppose to be a boy of about 16 and Rosina was in her early 20s. Plus over all he was a brat and though older and much less attractive the father was interesting and clicked with Rose on an intellectual level that can be sexually stimulating.

reply

He looks sooo feminine. Not attractive at all, IMO.

reply

He was cute but he was way to young to marry anybody, lol.

I'll add my voice to those who don't understand how Rosina could go for the father and not the son. On top of everything, the father was rather condescending to her. I found his character irritating.

Maybe we're supposed to assume that Rosina has a "father complex" of some sort, having lost her own father?

reply

Yeah, it makes sense why she would go for the older man, giving all that she's been thru, but I will be honest-- if this was a film all about the forbidden love between her and JRM's character, I would be allllllllllll over it! ;)

He seemed much too young. She preferred a more mature man with genuine interests.

reply

Agreed. There was absolutely zero chemistry between Driver and Wilkinson's characters. To me, theirs was one of the most forced pairings I've seen. Cringe worthy really.
