In the scene where Luke proposes to Isabel, he says that in his first marriage, they married out of college, right?? Or maybe they met during college and got married several years after college. I don't know. But I got the idea that they married either during or out of college. So did they wait many years to have kids??

Well in REAL life Ed Harris was 47/48 in 1998 while Susan Sarandon was about 52, take in the fact that movie characters arent necessarily the same age as their real life counterparts. So if Luke and Jackie (Ed and Susan) abd actually Ed's character said that he and Jackie had been together SINCE college and had married right after. So I would say that maybe since their oldest daughter was 12 in the film they had been married for at least 13 plus years. So after college they were 21-ish so they had to at least be in their mid to late 40s.

Susan's character worked at a publishing house. She either waited until she wanted kids, or she had a hard time getting pregnant. Or both.

They seemed to both be high ranking professionals (Susan before she became a SAHM as well), I could see them waiting a while to have kids. One of my old coworkers didn't have her daughter until she was older, in her 40s.
