Would have been 10x better without Audrey

Maria Pitillo was absolutely unwatchable. What a horrible actress, and an annoying character. Not surprised her career nosedived into nothingness after this.

he 1998 Godzilla remake is a distant memory for me. I saw the thing opening weekend under protest. I knew it was going to be bad. I had read the reviews. But friends of mine were Godzilla fans and they wanted to go, so I went with them. I was prepared for it to be bad. I didn’t like any of Roland Emmerich’s previous movies including Independence Day, so I was prepared not to like Godzilla. But I wasn’t prepared to hate it as much as I did.

My friends hated it too for the kind of reasons that fans hate a movie like Godzilla. They were upset about the changes the movie made to their beloved character. I don’t remember much about the movie, but I remember hating it for a variety of reasons. It was too long. The story was a mess. Instead of giving audiences what they paid to see (Godzilla smashing New York) most of the screentime was spent on Matthew Broderick who was clearly cashing a paycheck. It was like Ferris Bueller Hates His Job. I remember sitting there in the dark wondering how the once charismatic actor had turned into such a charmless bore.

But mostly, I remember hating Maria Pitillo’s character. I don’t even remember why. She’s a pretty face. She can’t have been much worse than Broderick or anyone else in the cast. But going back and looking at how the movie was received, I was not alone in my reaction. Everyone hated Pitillo’s character. It may be because while everyone else in the movie seemed to realize that it was a piece of crap, Pitillo was actually trying. Whatever it was, her performance was singled out as being the worst element in a terrible movie and her career suffered for it. Any hopes Pitillo might have had of becoming a movie star came to a quick end as the plug was pulled on the planned Godzilla sequels.

It's a shame. I thought she was cute. She was real pretty in 1989's She Devil, and I was looking forward to her becoming a star.

I thought nothing of it at the time but upon re-visitation, yeah she's a horribly written character. Apparently they limited her role in the planned sequel to just a brief cameo in the beginning then Bueller breaks up with her halfway through.

Was she supposed to be the Emiko in this version?

She's too gorky to be a leading lady.

Audrey is a totally unlikeable character, she is a backstabbing bitch who got her ex into trouble by stealing his tapes to make a news story out of.
