Is Fredrick Abberline immoral?

I watched it three years ago and I had one major problem with the depiction of Johnny Depp's portrayal Inspector Abberline and that is the ambiguity of the character. Abberline is addicted to opium and drinks absinthe, he is a decent man in some respects but his addiction overshadows his goodness over all. There is no real evidence that real Fredrick Abberline had an addiction to drugs or alcohol. In real life he was married at time of Ripper movies unlike this movie that depicts him as a single man and he lived until 1928 the movie shows dying of overdose of opium.

The directors the Hugh Brothers have been open of their use of smoking weed. I wonder if that had influence in their decision to portray Abberline as outright degenerate. I think the movie glorifies drugs. What do you think?

drugs don't make you a bad person.

reply

Drugs don't make you a bad person? Than what do they make you? People on drugs have murdered and stolen money from people including relatives in order to buy more drugs. Obviously, you were high when you wrote this.

reply

oh please people murder for all sorts of reasons, a lot of people kill cause they are drunk. So if you drink are you a bad person?

reply

If someone had too much to drink and get behind a wheel and ended kill innocent driver than yes you are bad person. I didn't say that drugs was the sort of evil. So sad that you waste your time defending harm chemicals to your body and mind. Your a drug addict no doubt so buzz off.

reply

You are an utter tool.
The actions of murdering and stealing are immoral, not taking drugs.

reply

Ok, I'm about as straight arrow, anti-drug as you can get, but that's a ridiculous argument! People not on drug have murdered and stolen money from people, including relatives without the motivation of wanting more drugs.

I don't remember Bernie Madoff mentioning drug-use as a reason for his actions.

reply

Drugs dont make you a bad person, actions make you a bad person. You can be addicted to drugs and still be the most moral person in the world. Can drugs possibly make you act immorally? Of course, but simple being addicted has no reflection on your morality. Stop having such a black and white view on human nature.

reply

thank you... now see dduorst how silly you sound.

Gull calls Abberline 'degenerate', hypocritical yes, but that is how the conventions of upper class Victorian society would have seen him.

reply

At the time of the film's setting those two substances were not illegal.

reply

Just because something is not illegal does not necessarily right. What if murder and stealing were legal. Would it be right to do these things?

reply

Apparently, in some situations murder is legal... such as in defense of oneself or one's family, or during a war to defend one's nation.

reply

The way that this rubberhole Loneright thinks, he or her must be legalistic Catholics with only the Ten Commandments as their plumb line of morality and intelligence. So putting it plainly, extremely limited if not stunted 'knowledge' of right an wrong, black and white, day and night. How contemptable and short sighted can one schmuck actually turn out?!
