Starting to appreciate this movie a lot more

After watching the 2015 snoozefest reboot that took itself way too seriously I've really started to appreciate the 2005 version a lot more. I really want them to make a third one because I seriously wonder if it would be recieved a lot better today because of how unconventionally light hearted it would be.

I don't think it would be received any better now. There are just too many people out there who will only like it if it is done by Marvel Studios. I enjoyed these films too. They aren't the best thing in the world, but they are still fun popcorn flicks that you can escape with. I never have understood the hatred for these films. I get that they weren't entirely faithful, but hey, neither is Xmen and those get rave reviews and are enjoyed by audiences (including me). FF4 is not meant to be dark and gritty. I am glad that some are starting to appreciate these a bit more.

I am not a fan. I just happen to enjoy movies. Fans are embarrassing.

This is one of the most hated superhero films ever.

I used to hate it too.

I watched it again, probably the first time since 2005, as a kind of joke before I went to see the new film.

I mean, it's pretty hokey, corny, cheesy, awkward...but I didn't hate it. I actually kinda liked it. It's sort of refreshing how goofy and fluffy the film is in the midst of all of these universe building franchises. Alba is terrible. Hell, the entire cast is either merely serviceable or bad...but they have more going for them than the new film, that's for sure. It's a comic-comic book film, if you catch my drift.

And after seeing the new film, this one looks ever better.

Yeah. I am rewatching both FF movies and they are not as bad as I thought they were at the time. Disappointing in some ways, but a lot more fun than I remembered them being.

The movie was lighter than a lot of others but I think not just Chiklis but also Gruffudd's and Alba's characters were or were trying to be pretty somber.

reply

Yeah, as although this version isn't great, one thing it does have going for it is that it doesn't take itself too seriously unlike some of these comic book films.

I have always been able to have fun with these despite the flaws.

Me too.

I loved this movie.

I know it has flaws but is fun movie.

This new 2015 movie is horrible. Not fun at all.

reply

Yeah I watched it again after the 2015 version and i actually hated it so much less.

I just bought and watched the Extended version last night, I forgot how GREAT this really is! Granted I grew up with Reb Brown as Captain America so my standards had been set low by those early years on live-action superheroes. But after seeing the 2015 FF I realized how great this film was, and not just "by comparison".

The script was tight, the character interaction was great, even the different Dr. Doom origin wasn't an issue as, say, Galactus next go 'round.

9 outta 10!

Still can't bring myself to call this or Rise of the Silver Surfer good movies. But definitely won't deny these two were definitely the superior films compared to the recent debacle of a reboot.

I'm in the same boat as well americanadian25, neither this or Rise of the Silver Surfer are good movies at all, but they are definitely miles ahead of the new one.

I think both this film and the 2007 sequel had the right idea, they just weren't done particularly well. I liked the light-hearted tone, the fact that the team became celebrities, and thought Chris Evans and Michael Chilkis were well cast. Though most of the other actors weren't very good, the pacing was flawed, and Dr. Doom was horribly misrepresented (though not as bad as the 2015 reboot).

The recent film, however... yeah that did pretty much everything wrong.
