How Much Was Nick Getting Paid?

For the gigs at the secret mansion. My guess would be $10,000 minimum given the nature of the job and the people involved

That's what I was thinking. It would be quite a bit.

Maybe he got paid in other ways as well. Those within the secret society probably have the power to allow Nick to land gigs at any night club he would want to play.

That may be true, but it doesn't seem as if Nick took those offers. He was playing Ziegler's Christmas party and a dive jazz club. Hardly perks considering the creepiness of the secret society functions and the fact that he was a virtual prisoner while playing.

However, I don't think Nick was entirely innocent. He clearly set up Bill. If he played enough times at those things, he would have had an idea what they were all about. So why did he give Bill the information knowing the consequences?

Then we have to take into account his cliche goatee and symbolic name.

Nick is definitely a shady character. There is something greasy and low-rent about him. The way he trashes his band right after getting off stage always rubbed me the wrong way. "The band sucked tonight," he says snidely to Bill. Maybe he did deserve to get roughed up a little.

Yes, I thought that comment about his band was nasty as well. I also thought that passive aggressive "Never a Doctor" comment was awful.

What can we hypothesize about Nick, how he is paid and that he might have set up Bill.

1) He is a nasty piece of work.
2) He is paid in money (probably a lot and off the books) and not in career pushes.
3) The group itself is probably too chicken s*** to choose one of their own to sacrifice, so they need a patsy every solstice/equinox. Nick probably entices a hapless interloper every meeting. Except in this film, Bill had an unexpected protector. They weren't too happy about that fact or with Nick's bum pick.

I never got the impression Nick lured Bill. I took him at his word that he just thought it was some crazy sex party for weird rich people.

reply

Right?! I always cringe at that part.. the casual way he says that remark too. You get the feeling right away he's the kind of dude who wouldn't think twice to step on your head to get higher.
