Why do we never see Tom Cruise nude, unlike Nicole?

I mean she's exposed in the very first sequence of the movie.

And she gets exposed many times more, to the point you (almost) get tired of it.

Only thing missing was full frontal nude (down bellow).

Tom however, never gets exposed at all, not one single bum shot.

When Nicole is looking the mirror removing her earrings (nude of course and with her bum hanging out), the second Tom enters the frame the camera zooms and pans above to avoid showing him bellow the waist.

Only realized this after watching it with the wife and she complained "how come YOU get all the eye candy (Nicole, countless pretty hookers) while all I get is a shirtless Tom and Sidney Pollack?".

For an R rated film based on orgies, she's got a point.

I mean I totally get NOT filming Pollack nude, but Tom was in peak physical condition, so why not? Was it a demand of his? Then why bother agreeing to such a movie?

Maybe because that is one of the things the film is looking at? The threat of undressing or being forced to undress is what Bill narrowly escapes. Being naked - bare, without any social armour. No Full Metal Jacket for Bill.

I get what you're saying, but having an actor with great looks and enviable body pretty much kills that message (such people are NOT shy at all about undressing, quite the contrary since they're used to show off their stuff).

For that to work you need someone whom obviously would feel uncomfortable being nude (someone in bad shape and with an ounce of self respect).

I believe that is self evident because as you said, he doesn't do them. The theme is the difference between male and female sexuality (notions of shame, attraction, fear, ego etc). As well as the fundamental similarities. A good hint is the language Alice uses when telling Bill her dream (you went to get MY clothes for US) - ownership, possessive. Consider the typical marital notion of a wife's nudity - strictly for the husband. And for the husband, only the wife. Otherwise, Eyes Wide Shut.

Please, it doesn't need to be that that pretentious. It may not be in shape, and too "small".

Kubrick was a sexist perv, like most men.

Society has taught us to judge a mans length to his manhood, yet a woman's body is less scrupulous..
Yes T&A I get it, but her sex part isn't as defining as a man's on film, especially in the history of film. We will turn an eye to small T&A, vs a small penis.

Tom Cruise nude...

I'd say,

"Because nudity serves a purpose in this movie other than sexual excitement."

The movie seems largely about a man's FEAR of being unprotected in sexual situations and relationships.

Plus there's the weird MPAA Puritans. They, I believe, require a dreaded NC-17 or X if a man is shown nude frontally.

The MPAA is actually more relaxed on men's genitals and women's genitals. A vagina shot would almost certainly receive an NC-17 rating, yet many films have gotten away with showing penises while still receiving an R-rating (Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Hall Pass both immediately come to mind).

Most likely it is simply Cruise wouldn't do it.

Maybe it's a statement on how society treats women. Like it's considered appropriate by society for women to get naked but if a man is seen naked it's considered demeaning.
