Because the government havent been known for tracking down young gifted hackers who break the law...then offer them jobs?

It seems to me that this was done to underscore the fact that this is a new, younger group of people who represent the future of this kind of thing. It's not super realistic, sure; but it also explains a bit why they all went along with Jon voigt's character without questioning him.
