When the old guy with the newspaper is on the bench reading and all of a sudden the wave comes up behind him, unintentional funny moment.

Maybe he wanted to go out this way, as normal as possible instead of screaming and running just to die all the same like everyone else in the film? Just a guess.

Yeah, that was my thought, maybe it was his favorite spot where he sat every day to read the papers and wanted to go that way.

I like to think he was reading an article in the paper about a massive tidal wave hitting his city just as he's hit by the massive tidal wave.
