Inconsistencies in story line

1. The envelope containing the info on the comet was in the vehicle that went over the edge and exploded into flames. Question: How did the envelope survive the fire and make its way to whomever it was addressed to, so that the President was able to name the supposed astronomers who observed it first? That point has bugged me since the first time I've seen the movie and I've seen it at least 15 times. It's never explained, at least that I've noticed.

2. During the President's initial speech he states the comet will, if not deflected, hit in 12 months. Then, a few minutes later he states the Messiah will take off in 2 months to intercept it. That would mean, apparently, the space ship would meet up with the comet, roughly, some 5 or 6 months from impact time. OK, but then how does the spaceship make it back in a matter of a few weeks (again, apparently) to again try to stop the comet a short while before it is to hit earth?

If someone has an answer to these questions, could you please send me email at: [email protected] OR [email protected]? I don't get to this board very often, which is the reason I'm asking for an email, if it wouldn't be too much trouble. Thanks.

Set your account to get emails when you get responses. For some reason it doesnt always send me an email, but it usually does.

1) The car burst into flames on the way down the hill, but there was a very quick shot of the envelope flying out the window, and presumably the goverment found it.

How the goverment found it, I'm not quite sure. Most likely a cop would have found the envelope on the ground after taking over the scene. If the truck driver survived, they have solid testimony showing that it was an accident and not really something worth investigating further. I dont think the info in the envelope was very self-explanatory. It kind of just looked like Wolf saved a couple of the comet picture before he booked it out of there. Most likely, the cop would have looked at his disk and thrown it in a box to never be seen again after seeing a bunch of random astronomy pictures.

You're expecting logic from the Hollywood pinheads, jim?

The envelope is shown being blown out of the jeep before it goes over the edge and explodes.

The months of time it takes would also explain how Mrs Frodos mom was pregnant the day they were planting the nukes on the comet but had a few months old baby when the comet hit.

reply

If I seen the contents of the disk and knew what I was looking at i would be selling it to the highest bidder, but I'm a jerk sooo...Anyway just too convenient that the government found it. If the police picked it up and didn't know what they were looking at, they would just throw it in a box and give it to the family. I had thought maybe the email server came up and the government got the email but Frodo's name wasnt included in that email. That is actually a pretty important part of the movie that should been made more clear,if it was something small i wouldn't try to make sense of it. Myself and others could never figure out how the "mixup in Washington" occured and why they would automatically assume Frodo was dead, they didn't know if he was in the car or not.Because something of this nature would be so important with regards to national security, u would think the government would be knocking on Frodo's door to see if he told his family anything.

He didn't turn off his computer at the observatory, even though the envelope blew out the window.

OK, but then how does the spaceship make it back in a matter of a few weeks (again, apparently) to again try to stop the comet a short while before it is to hit earth?
Presumably because the ship would have had to have taken a wide orbit to intercept and land on the comet from behind. That would have been a much longer trip than exiting and accelerating from the comet and returning to earth, then presumably orbiting the earth once to meet the comet head-on.

I know words. I have the best words - Donald J Trump, POTUS

reply

1. The envelope flew out and was presumably recovered at the accident scene.

2. T-12 months to go is the start. At T-10 months, they lift off and travel for 5-6months.
So they intercept at T-4 months. The comet is heading really fast toward Earth. Assuming they spent around 1-2 months around the comet on its way back, they have T-2 months left. This is like 8 weeks.

reply

And how the ship do a U-turn to intercept the comet?

reply

yeah, you got me. There's just no way any current tech ship in space can make a U-turn in space.

Essentially it needs to burn an insane amount of fuel to stop to overcome gravitational effects and then burn more fuel to go a diff direction.

That was Hollywood
