the parents neglecting the other kids would never happen

siblings and parents of disappeared kids have stated in constant interviews how the parent becoming over protective of the rest of the kids after an abduction so it seemed unreal they neglected the kids after this when the opposite would happen.

Every parent is different. Some become overprotective and some disconnect from their other children.

That is a stereotype... Just because there are reports that some people of a certain group behave in one way, that does not reflect upon the entire group.

For all the parents who would become more protective, there are just as many who would become neglectful toward their other children...maybe even abusive in some way. You never know what the human mind can go through or how an individual person can react. Like a previous poster pointed out, everyone is different. Michelle Pfeiffer's character clearly dealt with depression and anger in the aftermath of the kidnapping. Thats hardly uncommon.

Also, at the beginning of the movie, it was established that Beth was a little flighty and, although she loved her kids, she didn't always make smart decisions (e.g. Leaving two small children unsupervised in a crowded hotel lobby). To me, her reactions after Ben disappeared made sense given the kind of person she was.

Different things happen with different people.

In such a situation some parents would become smothering and overprotective and others would become distant and standoffish.

The movie based off the book Face On The Milk Carton shows the other side. The parents are over protective. The oldest brother talks about not being allowed to go places alone or even spend the night with friends.
