Father Jack

Some of my favorite lines and favorite scenes in this movie belong to Father Jack. When I first watched the movie and I saw him get off that bus and start weeping "Mother's not here, is she. She's dead," seeming all befuddled and confused, I thought: Oh no, I'm not going to be able to sit through this and watch the old guy suffer through the whole thing.

But then he unexpected turns out to be wise in his way -- and definitely happier than the rest of them!

I love the way he tells his sisters they should all have a love child . . . .

And then the nice little exchange where he asks the boy's father if he's going to marry the youngest sister and, after just the right length of time in which the boyfriend hesitates, Jack says something like "Good: better to leave her single than to leave her married."

And then there's the sweet line, when he comes out in the uniform some British army (?) officer gave him, and he says "There was a time when it fitted. There was a time when it was grand."

I just love Father Jack's character in this movie.

Clementine: I'm a vindictive little bitch, truth be told!

hooray so he's not pathetic! I'm glad to hear it because I'm about to play him at my high school.

Well, how did the play go? Did you enjoy the character? I thought he was one of the best in a cast of strong characters. It's been a year, so you may not even see this post! (most likely not) but just in case...i'd love to hear how it went, having just watched the movie. Thanks! :D

Drink! Feck! Arse!

Very cool!
He's definitely not pathetic. He is just out of place, because Ireland is really no longer where he belongs. His Earthy paganism and trouble re-learning the English language are what make difficulties for him.
