Ages of sisters

My school just recently performed this play and I was wondering how old the sisters are supposed to be? Agnes, I believe is 35, but what about the others?

Edit 9/10/2006: My question has been answered, thank you for the replies.

reply

I used to have a text of the play which told me the ages. Think this is them.

Kate: 40
Maggie: 38
Agnes: 35
Rose: 32
Chris: 26

I just relised you asked this nearly three years ago but I'll post it anyway.

reply

Hey thanks! :) I didn't realize I never received a reply for this, so thanks!

I'm glad you replied to the original question, even 3 years after it was posted. It's 8 months later and I'm seeing the movie for the first time. Was wondering about ages myself and happily surprised to run across the answer!

reply

I totally agree. I finished watching this for the second time and managed to put the sisters in the correct order; if not by age. So, Thanks. So, how old does that make Jack, the oldest child and the only son ?? He seems terribly old compared to the sisters.

reply

I think it's probable that the ages in the film differ form the ages in the text of the original play. I'm over age forty, and Kate DEFINITELY seemed older than 40 to me. Perhaps Maggie, too. :-)

reply

hey, i was watching this on DVD last night and i remember there was a point early in the film where kate tells jack that she is his elder sister. so i think kate has to be older than 40? or perhaps it's just that they got streep and gambon to play kate and jack and they are obviously older than 40 and 53!

and yes, thanks for the answer to the question cuz i was wondering about the ages too!

reply

I think Kate said she was his eldest sister, which doesn't necessarily mean she's older than him.

reply

Here are all the ages in one place:

Michael is just described as a "young man".
Kate is 40.
Maggie is 38.
Agnes is 35.
Rose is 32.
Chris is 26.
Gerry is 33.
Father Jack is 53.

So he was in fact referring to Kate as the eldest sister, not as his older sister.

ETA: They definitely cast Kate and Jack older. I could believe Meryl Streep as Kate, but I thought Gambon was terribly miscast.

Probably because one sister says she's 39.

I would have shifted the ages up, based on how they all look....especially if Jack is 53. Seems like Kate would be more like 48 and so on....

reply

Jack is 53 and Gerry is 33.
