Isn't it a little odd to have Thai beer at a high school party?

I understand the need to establish how Darlene & Alice got the idea to go to Thailand but it's a stretch to have them get it from seeing a bottle of Thai beer (Ayutthaya) at some gathering of high-school aged kids. Just saying. Also a little odd that they were able to travel to Thailand w/o their parents knowing: they would have needed passports. And, did they go to the airport alone? Their family didn't go with them to see them off? And, the family didn't ask for hotel & contact information?

I live in Thailand and have never ever heard of that beer. I think that it is a madeup beer for the film.

Good point about the parents not knowing.

Haha, well, ya gotta take what's given to ya.

Also, they were 18 were they not? Can you not get passports for yourself at that age?

They must have went to the airport alone because if not their family would have noticed they were getting on a flight to Thailand, and maybe they kept in contact through cellphones.

Maybe the parents were just incredibly stupid, naive and didn't really care.

"Do you want to hurt me?"
"No?"
"YOU'RE LYING!"

they probably took a connecting flight.

Yeah the beer being there is a bit odd, as for thier parents I don't think Alice's dad would have gone to the airport he seems to have given up on her but its odd that Darlene got away with it, it seems like she was pretty sheltered by her parents especially her dad, im pretty sure he wouldn't have just let her go off to the airport alone, also do you need visa's to travel to thailand I have never been so I don't know if you do don't you have to apply for them, I'm sure you can't randomly show up at the airport and switch your domestic flight for an international one on the spot??

I agree with what you said about Darlene's dad, and I'm pretty sure that he dropped her off at the airport. Maybe the way Darlene and Alice got away with it is that they actually caught a flight to Hawaii first, then took another flight from Hawaii to Bangkok. One of my coworkers is Thai and goes there every now and then, according to him Thailand-bound flights are heading West, so Hawaii was sort of along the way for the girls. So the reason why Darlene's dad thought that Darlene was in Hawaii is because he actually saw her get on a flight to Hawaii. I remember that before 9/11 they actually let passengers' family/friends inside the terminal, I flew to London 3 weeks prior to that day and my parents sat with me right by the gate until I boarded the plane. Obviously, after 9/11, it's passengers only beyond the TSA line. Given that this movie was released in 1999, Darlene's dad could have done the same.

In regards to switching flights, it's not impossible to do so, and I'm pretty sure that airline staff by the gate can assist with that. Surely, there's no guarantee that there would be available seats on a short notice and fares would be way much higher vs. booking in advance, but if airline can accommodate you, they will happily take your money. I'm sure that Alice and Darlene had money saved up to make that trip happen.

In regards to visa, no need for one for US citizens (at least according to Department of State):

Yeah that was unnecessary actually to show the bottle of beer with thai written on it because in her narration she said "Our friend told us about a trip one of his friends took to Thailand that was really inexpensive etc etc" and showed the friend explaining the trip. She said "someone mentioned it at a party and that was it" --- so the beer didn't even need to be shown. That wasn't what was given her the idea. It was the friend mentioning it in passing.
