I Believe Alice Lied

The guy that came to pick up their bags just as Alice and Darlene left for Hong Kong is the culprit that packed the narcotics in. Makes sense if he is associates with the higher ups that get paid well for each drug bust. Yes, I say conspiracy! This makes me conclude that Alice lied in an act of selflessness to set Darlene free after what happened between them. This is my take on the open ending and overall story. Anyone agree?

Yes, I think that guy was one of the culprits, and certainly not the only one. I don't think he packed the dope in the girls' room. The suspicious part was that when he was catching a cab for them, it looked as if he was waiting for a specific one. Then once the cab came, there was that long pause before he closed the trunk. I think the bags with dope were in that trunk, his job was to make sure they found their way into the girls' backpack.

If you paid attention to the details of the movie, towards the end Hank has figured out the whole scheme:

Nick/Skip or whatever that Australian guy's name was was a part of the drug smuggling ring. He duped young girls like Alice and Darlene into flying to Hong Kong, when in reality he was using them to smuggle drugs.

He would intentionally give up one of his "couriers" on any given flight to the police to insure that his other couriers safely got on the plane. If the police are busy searching someone, they have no time to search anyone else, so they get on the plane with the drugs and fly out safely. At some point in the movie, Hank finds out that the anonymous tip calls are recorded and the one who tipped the cops off about Alice and Darlene having dope on them had Australian accent, Hank figured that it was most likely Nick/Skip.

These drug busts also made that police inspector who was eventually promoted to Royal Minister or Justice look good in front of his superiors and general public since he was "doing his job" and catching those evil drug smugglers. Never mind that the real drug smugglers got through.

Hank got all these details figured out by the end of the movie, the sad part is that since they could not find Nick/Skip, they could never prove it.

I agree with everything you said.

And I agree with the first post, as well. Neither Alice nor Darlene did it. But Alice knew that she had not much to go home to while Darlene had a family and friends back home and she wasn't strong enough to manage staying in the Thai prison for any longer. So she lied to save Darlene and offered to serve both of their sentences so that Darlene could go home.

So were they waiting at security? I always thought they were literally in line to board the plane. So I was confused because your bags are checked way before the boarding line.

penni, there wasn't as much security before 9/11 so they could easily have gotten through.
