Ranting: What the hell is this movie about?..and how is that chick deaf?

I had no idea what was going on in this movie.

My motivation for watching it was Keifer Sutherland, but sadly he wasn't enough for me to say this was a decent movie. The acting in this was good because everyone was being really serious, but one thing I don't get: The girl is deaf, but she speaks perfectly. You don't even know she's deaf until the fight scene between her and her husband(that's also where the movie got confusing and retarted.) That's when I thought her husband had smacked the hearing out of her(because she screams "I can't hear you" like she's scared and doesn't know why), but we find out she had been deaf for a year. My point is she did not come off as deaf at all. So much to the point where I thought the chick was like one of the cop's wives or something, then we'd get to the deaf lady. Deaf people can't hear themselves speak right? Therefore they don't announciate their words. When they speak it's like with a lisp or something along those lines. The makers of this movie should have done their research.

I don't know, maybe I don't know enough about deaf people, but to me the girl seemed hearing paired. All the scenes in the beginning were acted out as if she could hear! What the hell?!

The girl being "deaf" was the main thing that confused me. Overall this whole movie made no sense. If you've seen it and you know what's its about can you please explain it to me because I don't get it.

Notes:
The woman is married, but is also a lesbian, her husband thinks she's cheating for some reason so he kicks the sh!t out of her(seriously he's abusive out of nowhere! They were getting along fine that morning!), she's in the hospital and then cops are pulling a burned up body out of reveene, so they start asking her questions and she keeps running from them(why?!) All the woman can talk about for a good half of the movie is her god damn passport(why?!) Keifer's partner is a bad guy but I don't know why or how, oh and in between all the chasing the lady and Keifer act kind of 'love interest' like with each other(but isn't she a *beep* lesbo?!)....Just, what the hell was going on in this movie???!!!

I feel better now. :)

Hi, your speech would only be affected if you had been deaf for a longer period of time. When you hear people talk that way it's because they were deaf from birth or a young age so therefore haven't learned certaiin words. Fonda's character had been sound all her life. Cover your ears and tape yourself. You won't lisp! I agree though that the start isn't clear she's deaf! Because she reacts to him creeping up on her before he gets there!

She's not a lesbian, that girl was her sister! Her VERY affectionate sister. Her husband didn't seem the kind that needed reasons to hit her-a trait abusers all share. I have NO IDEA why she runs or never wonders where her hubby is at hospital! It just seemed escalate into the ridiculous! The Bad Cop was bad because he was called out to her a year before and didn't help her-then her husband deafened her. It's not her passport it's her passBOOK (are yiu sure YOU aren't deaf? You seem to have missed ALOT of this) which has all her money to escape her husband in. She then finds her sister stole it and gave it to her husband-meaning he is alive. I have NO IDEA why Kiefer is in this. I too watched for him. Awful film!

hahaha No I'm not deaf, but I was a bit sleep deprived. It came on around 2 or 3 in the morning and was the only showing! Yeah I love Kiefer that much and got nothing in return. :(

Okay I understand the whole deaf thing now. And yeah her sister was VERY affectionate! Her behavior combined with me being sleepy out of mind just made me go "there" if you know what I mean.

But anyway, thanks for clearing a few things up for me. The movie was still horrible and I hate that I stayed up to watch it. But at least I'm not totally confused about the story anymore. haha

So yeah, thank you. :)

I can see why it would get a 3am showing with the weird lesbian sister, nonsenical plot and just ARGH!

Did you hate the end?

Kiefer: So yeah, hope you okay.
Fonda: *stares*
Kiefer: So...
Fonda: *stares*
Kiefer: I'll be off then?
Finda: *stares*
Kiefer: WOMAN, I'M KIEFER BLOODY SUTHERLAND! IT'S BAD ENOUGH THAT I'M BARELY IN THIS TO GET A SECOND BILLING. YOU COULD AT LEAST SAY BYE, YOU RUDE COW!

I am making my way through Kiefer's back catalogue. For every Flashback and Lost Boys you sadly get one like this. Am attempting Jet/Ground Control now. Least he is actually IN this one!

haha I could not stand the ending. That's when I got upset the most. It was just awkward. I swear all the chick did was stare and say like one sentence, then stare some more through the whole movie. I bet Kiefer was like "okay, feel free to make this into a somewhat decent ending. Care to give any dialouge? No? okay then..." I layed down so quick as soon as that scene was over. The whole movie was just...ugh jeez.

And it makes me sad when I see Flashback or Lost Boys or Young Guns because I just think "why did this have to end Keifer, why?" haha I still love him, but dammit did he have a bad patch of movies for a while!

Yeah, I tried Jet and no. That goes in with the bad patch along with The Vanishing (where Kiefer is strangely not hot at all?), Article 99 and that god awful Chicago Joe and the Showgirl.

I have Cowboy Way today. From the cover I am not expecting miracles...

EDIT: OMG, Cowboy Way was AMAZING. I wasn't expecting that. Although my expectations were tennis shoe high.

Fonda's character says she's been deaf for just a year, yet she reads lips perfectly. It's extremely unlikely she could learn such a difficult skill that quickly. Lip-reading Steve Weber's character, who has a lip-obscuring cop stache, would be tough for an expert. Maybe Weber didn't want to be recognized in this trash. Maybe that accounts for Hart Bochner's beard too. The plot holes in this pile up faster than a L.A. rush hour freeway accident.

I thought this movie was likely to be a stinker, because it stars 3 less-talented siblings of Hollywood actors ! This movie did cause me to "Break Up" - laughing, that is.

I am deaf myself, from birth, and lipreading is extremely hard work. She should have said she is hard of hearing. Hard of hearing peeps can hear and speak quite well, but am halfway through this movie and couldnt continue this. Its so stupid, a scene when a man talked to Kiefer on the phone for Bridget she cant hear the sirens behind her yet she understand what Kiefer said when shes not looking at him directly to lipread. I watched all of 24 and Kiefer is really hard to lipread so I dont know how Bridget understand him perfectly. she cant act as a deaf girl well, and the writers obviously didnt do research of deaf people well!! It would be a lot interesting if Bridget actually act like a deaf girl, sign language and difficulty to lipread. Oh well.

reply

Haha. The first half of the thread title describes my feelings as I watched it. This movie was all over the place. It comes across like the writer had no idea what they even wanted the movie to be about.
