one question...

First off, i want to say that this is one of the most beautiful, original movies i have ever seen ...
i only have one question...
when Beloved is recoving in bed after her arrival, and Denver is tending to her, she brushes aside the hair on her forehead to reveal 3 or 4 small scars/cuts on her forehead...
what, if anything do these indicate/represent?
Not the only question i have about this amazing movie, but the only question i want answered by someone other than myself...
Brilliant...

I found a page that goes into the scars.

These markings tell Beloved's story, how her own mother sawed away at the baby girl's tiny neck, her fingernails clawing into her forehead. In the end, this is the way in which Sethe can identify the returned from the dead Beloved (now an adult) as well. These scars serve as a reminder of everything Beloved had gone through. They become a symbol of what she has suffered and who she is.
