I've seen this movie so making times. It's so freakin long so I'd always get up and miss a little bit but I've pretty much seen it all.
I JUST found out on ebay that Luka was Sophia's son. I think I always wondered but since she couldn't have kids for so long I never thought he could be her's...
WOW...and I didn't know she was with Michael. I'd seen pieces of the beginning and I always though that was her and the one she married
Sophia never had trouble getting pregnant...not sure why the film portrayed that, in the book she got pregnant with Roberto first and within two years, with Nunzo.

The movie starts with Sophia and Michael on the beach, they intend to marry and he gives her the necklace, which she later leaves with the very young Luca.
At one point in the film Sophia does comment that she's having trouble conceiving, though it actually doesn't last too long and is with her second husband, Michael's brother. I think the reason they make this a point in the film is that the comment helps to show that her character is still thinking and having trouble dealing with the issue of her lost son. Something the book could easily do in many other ways. It's not so easy to portray such specific feelings you're trying to hide from everyone around you in a film. As the family does not know that she and Michael even had a child, she keeps this fact(Secret) to herself.

She could have children in the beginning. With Michael, she was young and a virgin. She slept with Michael the night he died, which resulted in Luca. Later she had the twins. At the end of the movie, the rich man's son wanted her instead of the neice. However, she said no because she couldn't physically have children. You couldn't tell because of the actress, but Sophia was suppose to be nearing 50. So, either due to menopause or something physical, she really couldn't have children.
