Criterion Collection: Why did they crop the picture?

I had just purchased the blu ray the other day and realized that picture is cropped or zoomed in. Why did they do this? I hoped that the picture would be more refined and sharper. Instead it looks a little like an MP4 file or something like that and the colors are more brownish (in my opinion).

Does anyone know why cause this may be the first Criterion release that I think sucks.
