Most underrated movie EVER

I just saw this for like seventh time, and I still can't believe this movie is so underrated. George Miller is one of the most talented filmmakers working outthere and his BABE PIG IN THE CITY is one of those cinematic milestones people will admire thirty years from now.
So join in people, start loving it today, it deserves it!

You have to be kidding me...This was one of those crappy sequels that deserved all the crappy ratings it got. When i think of the Babe franchise, it occurs to me what such a shame it is to be ended with a film as bad as this.

Underated...Its not underated, actually i think the IMDB score is overrated. The plot was terrible, it went from a fantastic first film (only slightly fictional), to a movie that was totally fictional, with weird animals, terrible back ground (The Big City) and an ending with a bunch of monkeys swinging in a tree.

Bah!

I have to agree that this film is very underrated. And from reading a couple of postings just on this message board alone, I can see why.

The "Big City" is actually an amazing feat. It combines special attributes of some of the most important and recognizable cities in the world. To actually have called the city a "terrible background" goes to show how ignorant you really are.

Examples: canals (Venice), giant statue (New York), harbor port building that looks a lot like the one in Sidney, Australia, twin towers (New York), a take on the trademark Seattle space needle building, etc. etc. etc.

It was really something.

And I'm not going to even get into the plot points.

It's a good film, and I really enjoyed it. There are funny parts, good acting, great scenery (you twit), and, to be honest, I always like dark comedies. This film is a dark comedy, and it takes some actual thought to get that. Something some people are apparently incapable of doing.

Don't get me wrong. You can dislike this film. That's fine. I respect other people's opinions. But, dammit, not with this film. I can see why it wasn't appreciated. It looks like just some kid's flick that doesn't harness the same strengths as the first film. But for everything it doesn't match from the first, it makes up for two-fold. If you would just watch it with the idea that it is a dark, satirical take on not only city life, but film study as well. It gives film buffs a real energy to see flicks like this.

Maybe if you'd just read this (from the Filthy Critic), you might see the other point of view on the film a little bit clearer (warning, lots of foul language):

I thought Miller & co. did a nice job of bringing forward the production design from the first and adapting it to the urban setting of their story. The visuals in both films are unique and creative. Pig in the City is good fun, but a significantly weaker story.

My wife and I agreed that it lacked a lot of the charm that made Babe so good. They replaced the sweetness and emotion of the first (it's sappy as hell, but I get choked up when quiet Farmer Hoggett tells Babe "That'll do, pig" at the end of the competition) with over the top slap stick comedy. They went for a more rollicking ride and sacrificed heart.

Also, while I applaud the change of setting rather than giving us a photocopy of the original - which many sequels are guilty of - you have to question choosing a storyline that used so little Farmer Hoggett. Cromwell was so good in Babe, he feels underused here.

How come every time I post, I get this same bullsh!t signature?

This movie totally ruled. Infact, I like this one better than the first. AHH! I was like eight or something when I first saw it and I was thinking "This movie better be good, or I'm making director brain soup." (I never liked animals...) and I was soooo surprised. It kicked rear end. AND I LOVED IT!!! The setting was beautiful and you cared about each animal. Even the fricken pitbull.

It's great to see some people outthere who love this film as much as I do. I recently saw THE TRIPLETES OF BELLEVILLE and all I did was to think of this film. It has all the atmosphere, the nightmarish setting, the grotesque and the heart that people are praising in this other also amazing film. But B:PitC did it first, people.
I have to disagree with the one that said this story lacks the emotional power of the first one. It doesn't. What it lacks is a clear storyline which to follow, since it adds so many characters and layers. It's not the simple fable of the pig overcoming his destiny. It is about people finding their place in their world. I mean, come on! We have the chimps, the old man who makes dying children laugh, we have the story of outsiders wondering in the most hostile environment imagined, and this has to mean something. I still get all steamy eyes when I watch the sequence of the little handiccapped dog dreaming he chases butterflies in that beautiful landscape. Or Babe saving the little fish. Damnit, I'm getting steamy eyes right now!
It rules, plain and simple.

btw...this movie was on both Siskel and Ebert's top ten of the year list, I think it was even Siskel's number one.

It is a genuine masterpiece, and got the result that pearls get when cast before swine (rimshot) :)

agree 100% with OP

it's a really well done movie... but i'm pretty sure why is underrated... the majority of people who gave the movie a 5.6 where people between age 18 to 29... well that explains all, mans in this age like more action movies, with guns and cars, and womens only seem to like movies like sex and the city and those chick flicks that look like soft porn, not care that much about movies like babe and probably see this movie like not that good...

And well Babe 2, is kind of dark and might scared some people who don't like to see the beauty of the movie... and only say that the animals looks horrible, big city is horrible, and stuff like that

I agree 100% with anyone who agrees 100% with OP. If I had to name only one film to define the term underrated it would be this one. How it got trashed when it first came out...

Cool.

Yes, i agree with you totally. It is not a children movie. It is indeed a masterpiece for adults. I only did not like the final in that dining room
