Have you noticed that the rating is getting higher every year?

In 2005, when The Island got released, Armageddon was around 5.3-5.4. Then in 2007, when Transformers got released, it was 5.6. Last year it crossed the 6-barrier, and not it's 6.3

I bet in 2-3 more years this will cross the 7-barrier.

Don't know about crossing the 7 barrier, but at the rates its going should be pretty close to.

My ignore list is very, very, very long...

maybe people realize this movie and "the rock" are fr better than Bay new movies

reply

it's endearing over time. i think people who haven't really thought of it in years and see it again enjoy it even more with the nostalgia. happens with many movies especially big action ones like this. you forget just how much fun they were at the time (Independence Day, Die Hard series, etc)

reply

Summarizing what's been said earlier- as 'the bar' for Bay movies gets progressively lower, this and "The Rock" get progressively better.

The stigma of it being a "popcorn movie" and a box office blockbuster is gone.

People can view it with less prejudice eyes. Far more generic fare with no name actors are diluting the hate for this movie. Who can't begin to REALLY appreciate a movie with Billy Bob T, MCD, Will Patton, Steve Buscemi, Owen Wilson, William Fitchner, Pete Stormare, Jason Isaacs and Keith David all with super memorable performances?! Then there is the Chris Ellis who shows up in MANY Bruckheimer, and Dottie, Nic Cage's mom in GISS.

Epic cast. Sure, Oceans puts as many together but it's cheaper as they are ALL leading stars. Armageddon is a more realistic casting ensemble while working equally or better.

Also, yes, people see movies like Island and wish Bay again made movies like Armageddon again, and they also see how lots of movies these days are super generic.

reply

Yes. some of the weaker scenes, emotional melodrama, were glaring when it first came out. But most of the movie is pretty solid. IT was definitely a popcorn
movie and I think it succeeded for the most part.

High horse: it was a throwback to pre-2001 scifi movies that were more or less cowboys, but riding spaceships instead of horses.

Just for the record, it's 6.4 now, Nov. 14, 2012.

It also may indicate that IMDB is attracting a younger crowd in the last years.

For some reason(s) I hated this movie in the late 90s and refused to see it again. It was a combination of the whole "blockbuster" syndrome with the fast-editing to please those with ADHD approach and, believe it or not, Roger Ebert's scathing denouncement, which shows you the power of words.

I picked up a copy super cheap this year and decided to check it out a couple of days ago. Wow, was I entertained! Despite my dislike of fast-editing techniques, the story pulled me in right away and held me to the end. Yeah, some of the melodrama is too much, like Willis' final words to his daughter (rolling my eyes), but the filmmakers actually put some depth into the story and it mixes well with the action and humor. Their best move was to focus on character so that we knew and identified (with) the many individuals before the last hour's non-stop suspense and action kicked-in.

I'd give it at least 7/10 rating.

I've never read it mentioned, but I always felt the success of The Matrix in 1999 overshadowed Armageddon's chance to be seen as a modern pyrotechnical masterpiece. The Matrix changed the rules for 2-3 years afterwards; no one in 2001 or 2002 looked back to 1998 as their inspiration for making a sci-fi spectacle, they looked to 1999.

As a visual and FX achievement, Armageddon is better than a lot of the films that came out the following year and given how disappointed most people were with Phantom Menace, Armageddon could have been remembered as the last epic sci-fi of the 90s. Except that The Matrix exists.

Like other people keep saying, the nostalgia factor makes me love this movie. I am well aware of the writing and the completely half-assed, corny ending (from the moment he pressed the nuke button and onward, yeesh), and all the scientific inaccuracies. But dammit, the words "giant 90's summer blockbuster" get me so excited and fill me with so much nostalgia haha I just forgive everything. Plus I love Aerosmith and their song in the movie, that song gives me many memories.

And to be fair, the movie still manages to be decent, funny, really exciting and stressful. Definitely better than the Transformers movies.
