Umm.. why was there a timer on the Nuke?

If you were to remote detonate a bomb, why put a 6 minute timer on it? what is the asteroid was 5 minutes from earth? Surely the decision to remote detonate the nuke would mean they'd want it detonated immediately.

There was a timer on the nuke because there's almost always a timer on the nuke. In fact, the nuke is the deepest character in the flick BECAUSE it has a timer!

Well if you remote detonate, you probably want the guys to have enough time to get it out of the spacecraft and get going.

Remember it's a back up plan. They would not remote detonate 5 minutes before the barrier. If things aren't going well, they would trigger it say 10 minutes before.

Basically it's a "okay times up folks".

Basically the timer is a warning to the people.

Exactly. Roger Ebert mentioned that in his review. He also mentioned the thing that they have to decide whether to cut the red or blue wire, when they forgot that this isn't a terrorist bomb and the guy on board should know right away which wire to cut.

reply

Not to mention that Gruber was supposed to be the "Munitions Specialist" so presumably HE, not Sharp, would know every detail of the wiring and detonation system on the bomb, so he wouldn't be there asking Sharp which wire he was supposed to cut.

Sharp was supposed to be the Pilot -- his primary job was to fly the shuttle. While he might have had some incidental knowledge of how the bomb was supposed to work, Gruber would have been the guy who would have known which wire to cut.

That's just what I said. The guy was supposed to know which wire to cut, period. This wasn't a terrorist bomb.

reply

Or was it.

reply

Well, for such an important job, you would want to make sure every crew member would have a general knowledge of the bomb..

And besides, they had less than 30 seconds or so, so I guess they were pressed for time...
