Inquiry about the ending (plot spoiler)

So Danny was offed by Little Henry. I didn't see anything that Derek did to affect that outcome. Even though he led Danny down the wrong path, his death was not really related to anything Neo-Nazi. It was just 2 boys standing face-to-face and Little Henry angry because he got ciggy smoke blown in his face from a white kid that didn't back down.

So now that his brother's been killed by a black kid, for the dumbest of reasons, does he revert back to being a skinhead? Or does he blame himself for his brother's death and stay on the straight and narrow.

reply

Derek wanted out of the skinhead life completely, no matter what. It had done too much damage to his family and himself. He accepted the fact, and told Danny, that things were going to get worse before they got better, but obviously he didn't expect Danny to die a few minutes later.

Even so, I believe Derek would only blame himself for Danny's death and not wish to seek any retribution. My main question is, though inevitable, how quickly did Derek become estranged from his family as a result of this? They certainly wouldn't be together long.

I thought you first meant Danny was offered a little Henry; as a euphamizm for doing heroin or something.

I will say one thing: I agree that Derek didn't do much to affect the outcome. Who is to say that Danny wouldn't have stood up to the bully if he wasn't a racist? They were being a jerk to a kid and he stopped them and blew smoke in his face, basically saying "im not scared of you" and when you get that message across to a bully, they stop.

And it would be stupid to anyone to say he should have just stepped down and let it happen because the kid was black. What? We're supposed to stand by and let black gang members do whatever they want? That's what got our inner-cities turned into the crime-infested hell holes they are to day. People won't stand up to the gangs and let them run around doing whatever they want, even covering for them from the cops.

So, what I'm saying is that perhaps he would have stood up to him even if he wasn't racist, and perhaps that still would have gotten him killed.

It's also important to point out that even though Danny is a crazy skin-head racist, little henry is the one completely at fault here. HE is the bad guy, not the skin head. He was the bully and he is the one who turned the situation into murder based on race.
That is why I like this movie so much. It shows that BOTH RACES have good people, and they also both have racists who facilitate crime and hate, not just white people. There are black racists too, something our society seems to be ignoring.

Liberalism is a mental illness, and it's the only one that's contagious.

Hatred becomes a vicious circle.

As an adherent to the far-right who denounces multiculturalism and who believes there are differences between the races, I believe the ending justifies Derek's old worldview to a certain limited extent. This is of course unintended by the writer and director.
I would think that Derek would graduate from low class skinheads typified by guys like Seth and Cameron and help foster a more sophisticated movement working towards self-determintion for whites in American and elsewhere. Put away the swastikas, stop dropping n bombs. Do not hate each and every black person simply because they are black, but understand hard truths about who and what they are on a COLLECTIVE level.
The scene in the bathroom where those three blacks were bullying that white kid were very real. What is more than likely not real is Danny getting in their face, blowing smoke in their face, and just walking away for the time being.

I'm not sure Derek was interested in it on that level and his gang life was really just a coping mechanism for the anger he had regarding his father's death.

SPOILERS ALERT -

When that guy went into the school's bathroom and killed Danny at the end, how exactly did he manage to/hope he could get away, given that everyone HEARD the shot, there were probably a dozen witnesses nearby who saw him enter the restroom etc, how did he escape?

And, given that he was possibly a student at that school, do you think they all identified him?

The greatest trick the Devil has ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist!

Okay, well first off lets establish some background to answer your question. Danny's death, Cameron & Seth's beating, & the attempted murder of Derek were all part of an organized 3 pronged hit by the Crips in order to take out the leadership of the DOC in one swoop. Specifically, Danny's death was meant to be Little Henry's initiation into the Crips. With that in mind, the question of Little Henry's escape plan likely involved his brother Jerome (or another member of the Crips) waiting in a car to drive him away from the scene of the crime. The reason I say this is because from what we saw in the deleted scene of Seth and Cameron's beating, Little Henry was waiting in a getaway car observing the beating. With this in mind it is likely that a car would have been waiting at a rendezvous point for Little Henry.

And, given that he was possibly a student at that school, do you think they all identified him?

I don't think they did. From watching the scene it seemed that Little Henry was lying in wait for Danny to come in the bathroom. It seems that he knew that Danny frequented that bathroom and was waiting in one of the stalls for Danny to come in. The murder happened before school began and the school halls were full of students. She while no one likely saw the murder, at least someone saw him run out of the bathroom with a firearm.

Derek was done with being a skinhead. Sweeney and his black friend in prison converted him.

reply

His skinhead days were probably over.

Stupid ending imo. I don't think the movie would have been any less powerful if they didn't kill that kid off, and had instead had him go on to live his life to do better as best as he could with his brother helping him.
