Apollo 13 movie sets?

Since the series came out not long after the movie and Tom Hanks' involvement, I was wondering if any of the sets (particularly inside the LM or Command Module) were reused from the movie? That would be a neat tie-in, but I haven't seen anything on it either way. Anyone know?

Why in the world would Universal lend HBO their sets....?

reply

There are actually prop rental places outside of Hollywood.
They buy props from ended movie and tv productions and then let the studios rent them for new productions.
Saves tons of money in production costs for the studios.

I think you'll find that these "sets" are all genuine NASA simulators and equipment that was dusted off for Apollo 13 then re-used for From The Earth To The Moon.

that is totally BS. you can find numerous pictures on the net showing that these are SETS and not the real things in "Apollo 13" or you can check out the DVD extras.

the real cabins are very confined spaces and they couldnt have shot in the real thing.

they've built the whole CM and LEM inside and outside. they even rebuilt Mission Control.

Some of the CM and LEM insides were built onboard of a KC 131 plane.

Internal shots of the LM, CM and simulators would have been sets, yes, however I am adament it has been mentioned, either in Apollo 13 or From The Earth To The Moon, that genuine NASA equipment was used including the Mission Control "set" (or its full name of "Mission Operations Control Rooms" MOCR).

The Mission Control "set" is actually located in Building 30 of the Johnson Space Centre which houses two rooms called MOCR1 and MOCR2. MOCR2 was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1985 but continued to be used up until 1992 when it was restored almost entirely back to its original Apollo era configuration. It is now listed on the US National Register of Historical Places so please tell me why they would BUILD a full Mission Control Room set when they have complete NASA co-operation and the actual MOCR where the Apollo flights were controlled from sitting empty and idle, needing just minor set dressing to have it come "alive".

And it's called a KC-135 nicknamed "The Vomit Comet".

reply

you can be adament as much as you want but you are still wrong. they've built the Mission Control set as Ron Howard tells in the audio commentary.

reply

In one of the various documentaries I own, I recall one of the mission controllers stating the MOCR "set" was so perfect, he would forget it was a set and walk out the door and automatically turn to head to the elevator... except it wasn't there.

reply

exactly. the set designers did a brilliant job.

I did the Level 9 tour at JSC three days ago (it was awesome). This question came up on the tour - they didn't film at JSC. They took measurements and photos and then built the sets in California.

reply

Not to mention it would probably have been a bit of a chore to fit an original simulator into the vomit comet for the scenes where they filmed in simulated zero-G during the making of Apollo 13.
