Why not on Blu Ray yet?

The rest of the Hanks miniseries like Band of Brothers, John Adams and The Pacific will be this fall. So why hasn't FtEttM not been given it's proper home entertainment treatment yet?

reply

I know. Ive just got a Blu Ray, and i just HAVE to see this series on it now!

Ive looked online and its under this heading....

Release Dates Pending
The following titles are planned for release in the Blu-ray format (as indicated by press release or previous public statements made by the distributor), but release dates have not been announced

My guess as to why it's not on Blu-ray yet, or in HD streaming, is because even though the episodes were shot on film, I'll bet the computer effects were created in SD for broadcast.

This is what happened when CBS went to put Star Trek: The Next Generation out on Blu-ray. It was expensive to recreate all those CGI shots (and may be why they haven't done DS9 or Voyager yet which used computers more and more).

So it's possible HBO hasn't ponied up the money to go through the trouble at this time. This is pure speculation on my part, I don't actually know how the effects were done.

It was shot in 1.33:1. Even the 2009 re-release in 16:9 was a scam: it is 1.33:1 cropped at top and bottom to 16:9c giving you less of the filmed images you less than the 2000 1.33:1 dvd set.

reply

Actually, comparing the first episode...it looks like a Super 35 reframe. Typically, shots in the 16x9 version have less on the top and bottom, but more on the left and right. However, judging on the receptionist's head that was just completely out of frame on a wide shot as she said her line, it was either framed wrong or not intended to be viewed in this ratio.

It was originally shown 16x9 and in HD. And tech specs here show that as its rations. Might as someone else said have been a case of super 35 that could be unmasked to 4x3.

I'll let the Tom Hanks and the various directors decide on the correct OAR to release it as. But definitely shoud be on Blu-ray.

I was really upset with that. Amazon says that the 2009 set is 1.33:1, so I ordered it instead of the 2004 or 2005 sets (both of which have many reviews complaining of cropping). I got it, watched it, and noticed it was cropped.

I think I read the Band of Brothers Blu-Ray will include some commentaries by the real guys portrayed in the series. I've said before I'd LOVE it if they did the same for FtEttM. (The "Apollo 13" DVD included commentary by Jim and Marilyn Lovell, so why not?)

I think it would make perfect sense to include people like Dave Scott (he was technical advisor anyway) offering commentary on "Can We Do This?", "Spider", or "Galileo Was Right", Jim Lovell on "1968" (or maybe "Can We Do This?"), Al Bean on "That's All There Is", and Gene Cernan on "La Voyage Dans La Lune", perhaps alongside the actors who played them, or the episode directors.

Pity something like this wasn't done for the initial DVD release. We could have included people like Grumman engineer Tom Kelly on "Spider" or Wally Schirra on "We Have Cleared the Tower" before their passing.

Best guess is it's to do with how popular something is, i.e. how many copies it would sell.
Unfortunately, the mini-series isn't that well known and probably wouldn't sell that many copies.

reply

I hope when they do put it on Blu Ray that they put it in it's original aspect ratio. I have a feeling it'll be on Blu Ray sometime in the near future. If it wasn't that popular, they wouldn't have put it in this nice packaging for the last release (heck the original release was pretty snazzy too). I hope they add some more extras.

I have probably been signed up for the "Alert" for "From the Earth to the Moon" on Blu-ray Disc availability on www.amazon.com since it was March sixteenth, 2008 or something like that. I have not yet received the "Alert" yet with the information on when "From the Earth to the Moon" would be available. Yet, now when I am writing this, it it April tenth, 2011 After Common Era, and the information about the release date has not yet come. I wonder why it is taking so long.

With the goofs that has been revealed and those who yet has to be discovered, i dont think its such a good idea to waste a HD convertion and release of it.
One of them will be screaming directly in to the viewers eyes if a HD convert is being done. You get that one in the Apollo 11 episode.

When Armstrong is putting down his foot for the very first time on the Lunar surface, look closely at the surface where he is about to put down the foot.
There is already a partial footprint there. Its like the production crew did not give a damn about cleaing up propperly after the rehearsal of that scene.
