If you like oriental movies maybe you'll enjoy Infernal affairs (Mou gaan dou) and Memories of murder (Salinui chueok). The first one is Chinese and the second one Korean. They are very good! I strongly recommend you.

Be sure not to miss Yimou's best film, To Live! You might also love his Story of Qui Jou.

The best Oriental director ever was Kurosawa, have you seen all of his beginning with Seven Samurai?

No great American films? Ever seen any by John Sayles, or John Huston, John Ford, Preston Sturges, Frank Capra? You couldn't have and made a statement like that :)

Here's replying to a post that is only what 7 years old?

The titles, from memory, were simply a time frame reminder like `2 weeks later` and don`t contain any plot information, except maybe to inform the viewer that the offence Zhang committed wasn`t serious. The 2 `get out of jail` scenes are hilarious due to the acting of Ge You (the Police Officer), who has been THE top comedic actor in China for over 10 years now.

You appear to be non-Asian which means I`m very surprised you even liked this movie, which i consider to be Zhang Yimou's best work. It`s a somewhat marginal opinion since Most would rank "To Live" and "Raise the red lantern" above this.

Three things stand out:

1. The pulp fiction-esque nonsense discussions with absolutely zero plot relevance. Hilarious.

2. The musical choices, which i find pretty spectacular

3. Just how well they nailed that mainstream/quasi-cop out of an ending. It's true the first ending would have been more 'proper' considering the style of the movie. But the 2nd happy ending works insanely well. Everytime I watch it I get that uplifting feeling, like 'Yes, there is still hope left in this F-ed up sprawling metropolis that is Beijing'
