good film but..

the one grip i have despite brannagh(sp?) being a good actor is that personally he pulls off a sub par woody allen impression.

while he captures allen's tone and speech pattern, he lacks in its delivery and the emotion behind it. Allen's film persona is an icon like chaplin's the tramp. He can always write it perfectly, but some actors can pull it off diferently making it their own creation in some cases( i particularly like Cusack's in Bullet's over broadway), brannagh tries too hard to duplicate the allen iinterpretation of it. The result to me is just a performance i think could of been alot better pulled off by Allen himself to improve the film.

I dont think I would have liked to see Allen is such a horrible role. I dont mean film wise, i mean just the character was not a good person. He managed it in Deconstructing Harry and Manhattan but this guy was worse I think. If Branngah had taken the role differently there would have been no call for Woody in this one but coz he did an impression of him through it just makes obvious comparisons hard to ignore. Agreed Woody would have done a better job but i was happy with Branagah.

Also, maybe Allen decided he was too old to be playing someone in such a love triangle like that anymore?

Are you serious? Not only did I very much enjoy Brannagh's performance, but I thought Cusack in Bullets Over Broadway was terrible! You're totally right about Brannagh trying to litterally imitate Allen without adding his own flavor, but I liked it that way, and thought he was great at it. I thought Cusack was miscasted (or is it miscast? sorry I'm French Canadian).
