Why didn't Woody Allen hilmself play in this movie?

Does Anybody know. He plays in almost every film he made, but not this one. Branagh is pretty good, but he does a Allen imitation, he acts and talks exactly like Woody would, i don't get it...

That's simple. Who would believe that Winona Ryder, Charlize Theron, and Femke Janssen would look at Woody Allen once much less twice in a romantic sense. I think it was a smart move on Allen's part. Talk about Ryder lying there like a dead fish.. GREAT FILM!!

How do you explain Diane Lane or Mia Farrow falling all over Woody? Women, apparently, find him strangely handsome. Maybe I'm just so jaded to Woody Allen movies, I don't even think twice about a beautiful woman falling for him. I really wonder why he didn't play himself in this film, that was odd.

I think that by 1998, woody had gotten just a bit too old to play the kind of character that is lee. it seems pretty important in the theme that the lead character must be 40 years old. so what woody needed was a younger guy who does a great impression of his 70's self. funny that a shakespearian actor turned out to be the perfect choice.

Well, let me see, ok, I'm a huge fan of Woody Allen and I know that he's had really gorgeous women through the years, but well, that was before, about 20+ years, now, it would have been ridiculous to see a guy who in 1998 looked older than he was then(63) having something with mmmmm, oh my god, she's so amazing, Charlize Theron, It was a good move by Woody, It was a shame though that he got somebody to immitate him, for me, that detail made the film suck.

maybe these beautiful women fall for him because he's so homely that they think he'll never stray. Boy are they ever wrong. heh.

Anyway, back to the thread question...it's the Larry David syndrome; Larry had a cuter, younger version of the character play his alter ego in Seinfeld. But then Larry's ego got the best of him and he left Seinfeld to start his own show on HBO. I still think to myself, damn Larry David is one homely bastard.

you just answered your own question. Almost anytime Allen doesn't appear in the lead role of one of his films, usually the lead actor will pretty much be playing Woody himself one way or the other. Check it out. Branagh in Celebrity, Cusack in Bullets, Sean Penn in Sweet and Lowdown. All adds up.

First of all, I have never seen 'Celebrity' nor do I have any real urge to. Secondly, Cusack sucked in 'Bullets Over Broadway' I don't care if I'm the only person on Earth who thinks that. And Finally, 'Sweet and Lowdown' required someone else to play Emmet Ray, because he's not the type of character Woody would play.

You are right; Branargh plays Woody because Woody is too old for that part; he said so himself in an interview.
He was also too old for the part in Jade Scorpio Something (forgot the name) and should have had someone else to play the part.

- A point in every direction is the same as no point at all.

I dunno... in most of his movies, the women are TOO young for him. Helen Hunt, Goldie Hawn, Diane Keaton (yeah, I know at one point they were a couple in real life but he still seemed too old for her in "Manhattan Murder Mystery"), Julia Roberts. I wonder when he'll do a movie where he's torn between which Olson Twin he should date.

reply

he is like 35 years older then his wife in real life. I don't know about too young. Love shouldn't be about age as long as its between adults. This too young and too old stuff is for the birds. Think about the person you love, could you not love them if they were twenty olders but still the same person that love right now?

reply

Branagh's cahracter is a huge *beep* Woody's never played anyone who is as mean and overtly self-centered as Branagh in this movie. Could you see Allen (on screen) shouting at Judy Davis in a theatre, "you're a sick woman, that's what you are! You're a sick woman!" ?

It ruined the film for me, ir really sucked, I wonder what was going through Woody's mind not to realize that somebody imitating him looks extremely annoying, I just can't bear it,IMHO, when he started to stutter it gave me the shivers, what a horrible immitation.

The problem is Woody can't create real people and his "characters" are walking talking neurotic cases and his scripts seem written mainly as an excuse for one-liners.
