Question for a Britt

Is this an accurate depiction of southern England? It reminds me of my hometown back in Oregon.

Hey Les, do you have a minute? For you Brad, I"ve got five.

reply

Accurate for the late 19th century in a rural district that was isolated even by the standards of the time.

Hard to say. "Southern England" covers a multitude of landscapes, from fairly treeless moors such as Dartmoor through wooded rolling hills as are shown in this film, through grass downland and built-up and industrial areas (London is in "southern England", for example). The whole of the UK (including England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland) is slightly smaller than Oregon, at some 94.5 thousand square miles as against Oregon's 98.5 thousand-ish, so we have to pack a lot in! The landscape of Hardy's "Wessex" (a fictional area including parts of the modern-day counties of Dorset, Wiltshire and others), in the south-west of England, does still look like this in the main though, and is often seen as a "typical English landscape" (though those like me from the moors of Northern England might disagree! )
