Bad script, Needed More Passion SPOILERS

Spoilers................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................ I had such a hard time staying interested with this script, It was like a movie simply made for the location, witch was breathtaking. The characters were on auto pilot and were sleepwalking through there scenes. Even they had to be bored with what they were given to do. This may be the only movie I have ever seen where no one said anything about what they felt. Each character felt something for someone but never expressed it. Even for the period in time this film was representing, this female character was written to be the most passive and gutless person you could ever watch. You feminist may want to skip this one.

Yeap, that's pretty much what I noticed too. She was too...bland. I never noticed anything in her mimics that would show the slightest sign she was opposing her dad in any way, plus, that scene with the rain...she did not make at leat ONE step, one attempt to go and get the man ( Giles, that is) back inside? Just let him go like this to "his shelter"???. Makes you wonder if she really loved him at all...

How about the part where she pretends her husband is not a cad, she was just, for an educated gal a bit "daft".

Well, this early- mid 1800's time frame is difficult to watch, even in with a good movie...when its about ordinary people.

George Eliot & Thomas Hardy Thomas Dickens -- -- The times were very stiff and the people seemed withdrawn. Except for the occasional spinster school teacher, if you didnt marry, chances are you'd become a beggar. Once your parents died.
Women had no work, outside of the home. Thus, marriage wasnt always about love & passion etc. If your parents could marry you off to a sea captain..then you just 'do your wifely duty" and live a nice life. Or work like dog, being a farmers/labour wife. There wasnt a lot of selection either, in these villages

I thought this was a very good story--but Im thinking the problem was-- they didnt have enough funding. Needed more character development --ended abruptly
I was done with the doctor myself !

I like your summary but have to disagree with you on the writing and even more so on the directing. They got Rufus Sewell and he is good. But it is the director that instructs him on his character and there absolutely nothing there on his performance
