A far better movie than given credit for being?
I don't like to buy movies. I wish Wilde was on TV more often. It's damned good. And yes, Stephen Fry is perfect in the role, as is Jude Law.

shareStephen Fry really does make an excellent Oscar Wilde. I've not seen this film for a while. I think I'll buy the DVD. It really is a good biopic. :]
Maturity. The very staple of the IMDb message boards.

Your signature is a hoot. Fry makes a terrific Wilde, even if he's a tad more oafish and less dandy than the Lord of Letters. There's still something quite magical about the pairing of Fry and Law. Or Law and just about anyone for that matter.
"Harold . . . That was your last date!"
As for me, I bought the DVD a long time ago :) "Wilde" is among my favourite films. Fry is perfect as are Law, Redgrave, Wilkinson, Jones, etc. Not to mention the music :) I really have no idea why this film isn't famous. It's a great story and a great picture in my opinion.
shareI wish it was on TV more too....but sometimes don't you find some movies just never seem to be on TV whereas big classics are on ad nauseum?! lol
shareYou can get it for a few bob now.

There is also a highly effective evocation of period - it's uncommon in period films, but I genuinely felt as though I had lived in the past for two hours, steeped in a dark high Victorian/Fin-de-Siecle atmosphere.
Yes, Stephen Fry plays the part really well and this is one of my favourite movies. I remember seeing Oscar Wilde's grave in Paris when I last visited the city and also the hotel that he died in in November 1900.
