Wasn't he a bitch?

This isn't a very intelligent post, I'm aware, but in everything I've read about him, he was rather bitchy and quite rude at times... This film portrays him too sympathetically I believe.

I don't think you're wrong, but not exactly right, either. From what I've read about Wilde, he was an extremely fascinating conversationalist, and by that I mean one who could listen as well as talk. He was it seems spontaneously witty, and some of his wit was naturally barbed talk about others. But he could also laugh at himself, at his own image, which took the edge off his "bitchiness". The film does portray Wilde as a little too ....cuddly, it seems to me. I don't blame Stephen Fry for this,(I think he was excellent) nor the director, but rather the screenplay, which could have included more of Wilde's more scathing side. Wilde was hardly ever outright rude, he was far too charming for that, a side of Wilde the film shows very well, I think.

Great quote - from Chinatown. John Huston's creepy Noah Cross. Or did someone else say it first?

There is an old definition of "gentleman" as one who is never UNINTENIONALLY rude. I think that fits Mr. Wilde rather well.
