Lord Douglas

was an abusive little prick, wasn't he?

If you've done your research into the true man and his character, he was really very complex. He could be quite loving, but also had his share of conceit and hot-headedness. In later days, he became quite the outcast himself, as Oscar himself had done. If you're interested in reading more about the man, the biography "Bosie" by Douglas Murray is really very good.

We are all complex. But one of his complexities was being an abusive little prick.

And one of yours is being rather ignorant. Judging Lord Alfred solely via the film "Wilde" is doing both Bosie and yourself an injustice. There are at least four well-known biographies of the man, and you'd benefit from reading one before speaking ill of someone you've never known.

"Harold . . . That was your last date!"

I agree with you, not judging someone by one film..

Before ever seeing this film I read several books on Oscar ("a century from now, my friends will call me Oscar, my enemies will call me Wilde")and I must admit I thought Bosie was a supremely petulant, rather childish and selfish person.....and then I read more about him, including as far as my memory serves me, his autobiography. I completely changed my mind about him...

So, I'm sure you'll agree....across the Imdb boards (not just here)read up on things before opening mouth and putting Size 11's in.....LOL

Well said, peterquincy. It's a fascinating read. I think OP is probably just young.

I accept that he may not have been so in real life -- I haven't read a detailed biography of him -- but in this portrayal, he's vile and vain, selfish and sulky. Really made me want to bitch-slap him.

What little I have read of him in real life, he sounds like he never did grow up or learn to think of anyone but himself. And he blamed and bad-mouthed Wilde (and feuded bitterly with Robbie Ross) to the end of his days.

What a shame Oscar Wilde ever met him.

You might very well think that. I couldn't possibly comment.

His Father was a brute.

I think Bosie was a lonely, confused soul.

If it harms none, do what thou wilt.

reply

Yes he was in this movie. I love Jude Law and I hated this character.

reply

I love watching these types of characters in the movie... But not really meeting them in real life

Anyway, I don't get all the talk "poor Oscar, Alfred ruined him blah blah..."

If we're judging from the movie, Oscar Wilde was far from a nice person too. It seems like he tried to be, but didn't really succeed.

but was he?
