Possible plot hole...

Did anyone else find it odd that if Linda left town to have her baby, how ironic was it that said baby ended up adopted in her hometown?!?! Or did I miss something?

reply

Yes, I did - and I also missed the identity of the victim of who was found in the woods at the beginning of this movie (Someone who had been dead around 3 years). Was that important?

I don't remember hearing a name, but I think the purpose of pointing out that death was simply to notice the mom. Remember the lady who showed up and begged to find out if it was her daughter who had been missing for 15 years? That's Linda's mom, and she was trying to find out if it was Linda (they weren't sure if she was dead or alive...she had just gone missing). It was a way of telling the viewers what happened without having to sit the two of them down to discuss what happened when she showed up at their doorstep.

**MAJOR SPOILERS BELOW**

As for the plot hole...here's what I got from the story. At first, it seemed like Linda (the real mom) left town to have the baby and run away in order to avoid being sent away to a special school and probably to avoid being looked down upon by everybody in town. But near the end, the daughter found something in Linda's old piggy bank...a letter that made it sound like Linda was being raped by her father.

It's still a little confusing as to whether the 'adoptive dad" is in fact the 'real dad', after finding out about the father raping her (when would she have gotten pregnant from Greg if she ran? If she was with him before she ran, how could she have been sure it was his? She couldn't have ran away from home and stayed with Greg for a while to hide...Greg confessed to Karen that Linda had been a fling/affair while they were having problems.)

Regardless, Greg thought he was the father and he went to a lot of trouble to make sure he got his real child when he and his wife decided to adopt. So that solves the 'mystery' of her ending up with her real father, even though he was in a different town.

But when I say "sent away to a special school", that's an assumption. The small plot hole that I remember is not being completely sure about the age Linda was when she was pregnant, but when Linda was visiting her mom, she said "you would have sent me away"...and the only way they could have done that is if she was under 18. But like I said before...did her father get her pregnant, or did she get pregnant from Greg? Did she run because she was pregnant, or did she run because she was being raped?

MY major confusion was with the Detective. Was he just a random killer with a badge? (She was his victim and he did all the research on Greg to find someone to frame? Why frame Greg; wouldn't the horny hotel guy have just been easier?) Or did the Detective target Linda and Greg because he had some sort of history with Linda? The movie seems to point in the direction of "random killer", but there's so many RANDOM things going on during the movie that it's hard to keep it straight (Greg's the father, Linda's father is an escaped rapist, the detective is a killer...on and on).
