Local Vs Forigner & Love Vs Hate

After reading the comments left by others for this movie, especialy those refering to the way Australians dislike this movie, I was wondering amongst those people how many Australians like/dislike this film and likewise for people from other countries.

Personaly I am amongst those who dislike this film but not because of it's portrail of Australians (a group to which I belong), more because of my antipathy for this strain of plot.

Thanks,
Kristian

Im Australian and I agree with you. However in my case I would say I like it because of the characters, despite the plot.

I just think its an odd movie, it reminded me of Nothing but Trouble.

I gave the movie a 6. In other words, it's kinda middle-of-the-road. Not great, but not terrible either. It'd probably be a lot more enjoyable if it wasn't for the "Daddy O" character, whom I found extremely unlikeable.

And by the way, I'm not an Aussie, but I did live in Melbourne for 10 years...

reply

I agree with you on the Daddy O character....... plus I'm not really into toilet humour... but........

Although I cringed BIG TIME when I first saw this movie, I have now watched it about 5 times and it's really quite good..... if you can get over the cringe factor....lol

I LUV John Schaech (Teddy).. Apart from being GORGEOUS.. he's very believable as the "token YANK"..... and does a great job...

I also loved seeing Maggie Kirkpatrick (The Freak) as I am a HUGE Prisoner fan....

I am 100% Aussie (whatever that means) and love the movie... a lot!

In fact I have made practically all of my friends (also Australian, obviously!) sit down and watch it and they all now love it as well...

Also, a lot of the movie lines have entered into our vocabulary... who could forget "WHAT IS IT YOU *beep* FACE!" and "PART M' BEEF CURTAINS!"

People who can't laugh at themselves and their own culture are too uptight and need to loosen up!

I just wish they would release it on DVD... with special features and commentary! *sigh*

reply

Yes! Why this gem is not out on DVD is beyond me.

reply

It is
It is..!!!
In Australia

In fact it was released 3/2/05 without ANY fanfarre... TYPICAL

The prices vary from $10-$15 online so shop around...

Sanity is the cheapest online I have found.... so far...........

I'm Australian and I usually have a high tolerance for, in search of a better word, crap, but this is the absolute WORST movie I have ever seen. I hate dissing things in general, but I had to reply to this thread honestly. I do know people that like it though, so I guess it just depends on personal taste. Maybe one day if you fans of this convince me that it really is worth investing time in Ill rewatch it and try it again, which has worked for me in the past, but it's hard to imagine my mind changing.

I don't take myself to seriously as an Aussie, I didn't cry when I saw our portrayl on The Simpsons (well I did a LOT of cringeing), I love Kath & Kim, Muriels Wedding is ok as is The Castle, but I can't understand why so many Aussie films have to be so over the top, it's embarrasing! We're not all 100% yobbo/wog/rich *beep* Anyway, I'm ranting, sorry, I just don't get it! ;)

I'm Australian and this movie rocked!!! It's how I'd imagine John Waters making a feature length episode of Skippy!!!

Aussies who hate this film for "it's portrail of Australians" are mising the point because it's NOT a portrail of Australians nor does the rest of the world think you all act like that. Remember, Whoop Whoop is a forgotten hole away from civilization. We Americans have created horrible characters & plots. Texas Chainsaw Massacre is not a portrail of Americans or even Texans for that matter,

I am an American and I saw this film on late night TV, here in the US. I have only met one Aussie in my entire life. This said, the film played into every ignorant stereotype I have of Australians -- eccentric, unpredictable, violent. It makes me wish I could see a wider variety of Aussie films and TV, to get a more varied picture.

reply

This was a crazy little film. I liked it when I saw it about seven years ago.

I am american and love this movie cant find it on dvd here, does anyone know online somewhere i can order it?

reply

Easy for me to say, maybe - I'm an American, but I love, love, LOVE this movie! I've seen it more than a few times on DirecTV and have it on dvd. I certainly don't stereotype every Aussie per what I've seen in the film. I realize that the characters at hand have been rendered from their circumstance, which could just have easily been in Canada, the U.S., or anywhere else really. Interesting characters, a unique storyline, wonderful performance by the entire cast, especially Rod Taylor - How could one go wrong with this film?!

reply

I'm Australian and I couldn't get enough of this movie, Rod Taylor was so perfect in the role of Daddy'o, he reminded me of my uncles, after watching him in other movies it was such a freak out to see him act and talk like that, just wondering what the Americans thought of our use of language and slang in this movie.

reply

I am from the US and I LOVE this movie! its so lighthearted and fun to watch! I own a VHS copy of it but I'd LOVE a DVD of it.

reply

I liked the movie but thought it a disgrace Rod Taylor wore a Collingwood footy jumper. Filth.

reply

Understood, but I think that the Collingwood jumper was meant to enhance Daddy-O's essential 'bogan-ness'. I mean, we don't exactly associate the Collingwood guernsey with 'class', do we! I think it suited Rod Taylor's role!

I'm Australian and I do love this movie,
I can't see why it's not a cult classic yet, Maybe one day !
I grew up in the bush (back in the sixty's) always on the move,
What can I say ...

And Castlemaine Beer was the perfect choice, For the non Australian's out there
Why do they call it XXXX(Fourex)beer ? Because Australian's (or Queenlander's)can't spell Beer !
