Copyright

I would like to know if any of these versions of the James novel required the permission of The Heiress copyright holder to produce these films? It is stated that this film is a version of The Heiress. If so, where does copyright permission enter into the picture?
Also, does anyone know what piano was used for this film set in the 1850's??
