NC-17 rating..

What happened to get this movie an NC-17 rating originally? What did have to get cut to make it an R rating?

reply

I've read that a 'rather graphic' sex scene was cut, but I can't say for sure since I've never seen the uncut version. Personally, I'm a bit disturbed that I first saw this film when it was first released in the U.S., but only just today learned that it was censored...

reply

The movie is not cut. It was just rerated.

reply

Erick Zonca said that he edited some part of sex scenes to get R rating.

reply

Was the version on IFC the 'uncut' version? (It said so, unless that was the fullest version available and the rest was deleted scenes).

reply

no way was this rated NC17. I watched it with my dad when I was a teenager - I would remember if it was really embarrassing. There is one sex scene, but it's not in there gratuitously.

I really do not understand MPAA ratings... In France this movie was rated "U". The story is a bit depressive but not subversive. It is really rare when a movie is X rated in my country (NC 17 does not exists). The censors in France are really openminded (and sometimes too much). For example, Requiem For a Dream (totally uncut) was "only" rated no childrens under 12 (-12) and this (excellent) movie was so disturbing that I wish I would have read more informations before the screening. Anyway, I do not agree when a movie in america is nc-17 rated only 'cause there is one shot with a woman which showing her breasts... Ridiculous...

has any movie ever in France been rated mature when it gets a PG-13 here in the states?...like Batman, Red Dawn, Critters, etc...

reply

This was shown recently very late on UK TV and there is what I would describe as a graphic sex scene, which came as a bit of a suprise as it was the only one.

reply

Don't know what specifically was cut in the sex scene to secure the R-rating but reportedly Zonca did shoot and process enough material for a three-hour version of the movie (hey, it was in The New Yorker, so it must be true, ok?). Can you say "I want my Criterion DVD w/bonus materials."
