Rusty was horrible in this

He was seriously terrible, no screen presences and terrible joke delivery

No way! He was HI-larious. He's no Jason Lively but still, Ethan embry did a decent job.

Who's that coming 'round .... that corner..

I disagree, Rusty was hilarious. His mannerisms fit the role so well.

I think the filmmakers had a serious problem in the characterization of Rusty in this. The original Rusty was impish, but sensitive and lovable.

They couldn't do the same thing here. They made him a goofy, good-time-Charlie kind of older teen. Then there's the Deus ex machina with the cars and the very convenient Jilly hookup, which all represents cheating in their attempt to make him special and interesting as a character. In Jilly they're bringing in heavy artillery, producer Jerry Weintraub, to blatantly and explicitly bestow specialness on the Rusty character. It suggests Weintraub himself needed to feel assured that enough was being done to jazz up Rusty, so he had to do it himself.

And they had to jazz up the role itself. They couldn't just tell EE to act special and interesting.

EE actually looked like he was bewildered in how to play Rusty. It was such a tough character to live up to, plus there was all the unlikely stuff that was happening to him.

Rusty was terrible. He acted like he was retarded.

I disagree. This Rusty was my favorite.

I liked Ethan Embry as Rusty. Jason Lively was horrible as Rusty in "European Vacation".

I'm just watching it now and yes this Rusty is terrible.

Have to disagree. While original "Vacation" Rusty is the definitive version of the character (as played by Anthony Michael Hall), "European Vaction"'s Rusty (Jason Lively) provided a fun goofy take on the character, but "Christmas Vacation"'s Rusty (possibly due to the much large ensemble piece that that film was) was almost a non-player character and undeniably the weakest in the series - not through any fault of actor Johnny Galecki's performance, but just due to the fact he had very little to do or say. "Vegas Vacation"'s Rusty (by Ethan Embry...well done!!) is a resurgence for the character in performance and spirit and an absolute joy to watch! Sweet, funny and thoroughly likeable, "Vegas" Rusty far MY own favourite of the role!!

Agree Johnny Galecki was the worst. I enjoyed the other 3 Rustys. Johnny's hair wasn't even the right color. The Christmas Rusty sucked.

Vegas Rusty was my favorite

...........Zing!

reply

I agree, Vegas Rusty was the best of them. He rolled with punches and rolled with the flow, he was born for Vegas.
