If you ever get the chance, see the UK version; it has a sultry scene between him and a mysterious hitch hiker: this was not shown in the US version, for reasons I don't really understand.
I don't have to see this remake to know that it sucked.
Yes, Mr. Newman was fantastic in the original. I couldn't connect with Mr. Mortensen's character.
shareI did see this remake and it blew big time. None of the existential angst or spiritual ambiance of the original, not as well made, and of course FOX turned it into a stupid Libertarian poltical statement, which is blasphemy in its very relation to the original film!
shareApparently they wanted to make Smokey and the Bandit and couldn't get the rights. The remake was like turning Easy Rider into a movie about motorcycle racers. The Vanishing Point was a counterculture film not a car chase film. Change the car, the title and the character's name and no one would have known it was supposed to be The Vanishing Point.
