Did the filmmakers hate the original?

The remake has nothing to do with the original. They turned one of the standout counter culture films of the 70s into Smoky and the Bandit. The film was originally about an anti-establishment outlaw making a stand not about some guy trying to get home to a sick wife. It would be tough to remake The Vanishing Point because the world has changed so I guess they didn't even try. They just ripped off the title and make a car chase movie. They couldn't even get Super Soul right, of course they changed the name like EVERYTHING else. The original was about a man with nothing to loose, the remake was about 90 minutes too long.
