Not that I ever expect a sequel, but it's fun to imagine...

...where Ulee and the family would be these 15 years later.

ULEE: Semi-retired but still working part-time in the bee business. Married Connie in 2000. Since 1998 has been active in veterans' groups.

CONNIE: Now Mrs. Ulee Jackson, now the chief of nursing at the local hospital and supervisor of the substance abuse clinic. Just turned 60. Works part time helping Ulee in the bee yards.

JIMMY: Got out of prison in 1998 and worked for Ulee in the bee fields for 4 years. Now working as chief mechanic in the garage in town.

HELEN: Stayed clean for a few years but relapsed into alcohol and drug abuse about 2000. Divorced by Jimmy in 2002, now living in Tallahassee.

CASEY: Graduated high school in 1999, attended community college for two years. Had a period of post-HS wild living. Married with two kids.

PENNY: Graduated high school in 2004. Did an Army hitch in Afghanistan as a medic trainee from 2004-07. Returned to the U.S., attended Florida State and got a degree in insect horticulture in 2010. Returned home and now manages the Jackson Honey Co. Participating in university projects to reduce bee mortality rates.

EDDIE: Released from prison in 2005 but arrested shortly afterward for stealing a car, assault with a deadly weapon and dealing methamphetamine. Back in prison, scheduled release date 2016.

FERRIS: Killed in prison in 2001. Got in a fight with another inmate and asked, "oh yeah, what are you going to do about it?", and found out.

Actually a sequel wouldn't be that hard to do -- Peter Fonda is doing guest shots on weekly TV shows so it's not like he is some unapproachable figure. Patricia Richardson is also doing TV movies and stuff like that.

Vanessa Zima (Penny) is also at that mid-level acting level, not a big-time superstar or anything. I would think a sequel would focus mainly on Penny.

Jessica Biel is of course a megastar so signing her would bust the budget -- maybe the script would have to just write around her. Unless she would be willing to make a low-paid cameo appearance for old time's sake.

8 years later...I like your "fates" for the characters for a sequel. Penny going into the military(like her granddad) and returning to run the family business is great. Helen "not making it" is sad but likely.

Its nice to know that Ferris gets killed because...

...in terms of the movie as we have it, Ulee has reason to worry when those two guys get out of prison. He rather jokily asks the sheriff, "be sure to let me know when they get out," and there's likely reason to worry about that. But I suppose that the sheriff and other authorities would be watching over those guys when they get out(early possible, "good behavior.") Ulee would be a lot older, maybe dead, but if not dead...vulnerable.
